Xbox 360 and Rear Projection

1227 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  Villanman
I recently purchased a Philips 51inch HDTV (rear projection set) 51PP9100D from Circuit City during their Black Friday sale. I have noticed that while i am watching certain HDTV channels the picture is super clear (Discovery in HD, some of the INHD channels, ESPN, etc). However, when i am using my Xbox 360 it almost feels like i am playing it in SDTV. I have it plugged in using the component cables into the set, have the 360 detecting that it is a 1080i display and set up for that, but while I am in the game menus and things like that it feels like the performance isn't there and the picture isn't very clear.

On the advice of some people on the 360 forums I purchased a copy of Avia and calibrated the settings of the tv the best i could, but it just feels like i am not getting very good performance while gaming.

This is a long shot but does anyone have advice on this topic? Hopefully i have been descriptive enough of my set up and the problem I am having.

Thanks in advance for any tips or suggestions!

you have the switch on the back of the 360 set to HDTV?
The picture quality on my DLP rear-projector is as glorious as I had hoped. I concur that you should double-check that you have the switch on the 360 end of the component cable set to HD. It's set by default to SD.

Unfortuanately, I don't think we can assume that by calibrating with Avia that you will have things set up right for 360 gaming. It may well be that the DVD player "output" of the 360 is different from the native output when it's displaying a game or the dashboard. (I've heard that the DVD output is extremely bright?)

Both PGR3 and the new Quake 4 demo have simple video set-up screens where you can at least get your black-level set appropriately. PGR3's screen also lets you take a shot at the white level. Avia, it's not. But it's something.
Well as someone on the other forums mentioned, Avia isn't gonna help calibration for a 1080i or a 720p picture - only for a 480p one =/
Are we to assume that you have the 360 set up to display in 720p or 1080i mode in the dashboard settings? Whichever resolution is native to your set, probably 1080i.
Yep i have the 360 set to widescreen 1080i.

I mean, i think that it is displaying in HD. I just have clarity issues with it. Just doesn't seem very sharp reading text on the different blades while I am in them. PGR to me doesnt look much different than when it was on my SDTV. It just seems inconsistent to me.

The next thing to check would be your TV settings.
Are you sure the red AUDIO cable isn't plugged into the red COMPONENT VIDEO input?

Don't laugh, I've had 2 friends make that mistake before.
I've got mine hooked up to a 50" Grand Wega LCD rear projection and it looks fabulous. I can't keep away from it. My girlfriend hates me right now.
The 360 looks sweet on my 57" Hitachi RPTV. Double check all your connections and maybe borrow a buddy's 360 component cable to do a quick test.

I did something similar also!! :)

I have a 42" toshiba RPTV and the picture is very nice.
I have the Philips TV and the Xbox 360 and it looks great. Have you gone thru and done the multi-point manual convergance?

Also as someone mentioned AVIA or DVE won't really help calibarte a 1080i signal. I did use it however and it did make an improvment in setting colors properly.

Another issue is when the Xbox 360 is playing DVD's it runs at 480p mode not 1080i like when playing games.
