I thought I'd jump on the HDMI bandwagon and just bought a HDMI cable to connect my XBOX 360 to my Sony 40S3000 (720P) LCD. The TV works fine with the supplied component cable at 720P. When I attach the 360 with the HDMI cable I get an "unsupported signal" error with the 360 still set at 720P.

Should I set the XBOX to 480P and will the TV automatically upscale to 720P?

hook up component again and double check your settings.

Do you by chance have both component and HDMI plugged in?

Any other components in the home that support the HDMI cable to make sure if the cable is bad?

Or you can buy the same cable and buy a different brand and test them both out.

I thought this was going to be a pretty straight forward 2 minute project...unplug old cable, plug-in new HDMI cable and walah! HDMI picture

It was a bad cable. I bought 2 from Amazon and was reluctant to open the 2nd one but after an hour I finally gave up and opened the other cable and it worked. I guess that's one of the down sides of buying cheap cables. Oh well, at least one worked.

that's exactly why you should be buying all of your cables from Monoprice, since they have a lifetime warranty on all cables they sell, they would replace the defective one that you purchased...

Actually Amazon is quite good w/ returns when returning defective merchandise. Just print out the prepaid mailing label from your printer, put it back in the box, and drop it in the mail.
