XBOX 360 on a large LCD - Component or VGA?

489 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  TRALFAZ
Recently got a Sony 46" XBR2 LCD and I'm getting an XBOX 360 soon. Was curious, what is yal's opinion on the quality of the connection via component v/s VGA?

I tried both with a friend *very* briefly, and I thought the VGA was slightly crisper, but like I said, it was a very brief comparison (I think I may have forgotten to go full pixel, which might have amade a diff though). However, the VGA port does not have a currently known discreet input code that I can program into my remote (would have to do some obscure macro). Also, the component cable comes with the XBOX package I'm looking at, whereas the VGA is an extra addon. Thoughts?

I am not sure about your specific TV, but would suggest you opt for the VGA.

Try them both. Nobody knows how well it will look to your eyes in your house with either connection.

Purchasing a cable and then taking it back is a lot more effort then soliciting some advice on a forum I trust :p If a large group of folks feels strongly one way or the other, that would be good enough for me.
I use the VGA cable...and I personally find the image to be a hair better. The VGA cable allows you to upscale DVDs...so if you want to do that then I'd go with VGA.

The only way that would work is if 100% of everybody agreed that one was clearly superior than the other. Every once in awhile this same thread topic comes up, and its the same responses. Enough from both camps (VGA and component) have stated that one or the other is better. Plus there are other considerations to consider. Connectivity, calibrated inputs etc...

That's why I suggested just trying both. Having a majority of people telling you that one is better than the other doesn't gurantee that you won't be in the minority.
As much as you hate to try both and then decide, this is the only way to go. My Sony 23 inch looks better with the VGA but my Polaroid 32 inch TVs look better using component. I don't know why this is, but it's true.
