3 for component video,

2 for analog audio,

1 for digital audio.

This looks like it's going to be one cool box.

Getting hi-res for your game console isn't anything new. Dreamcase had the VGA Box, and PSX2 is starting to get them too.

Yeah but they will output 640x480 which is basically 480p if I'm not mistaken. None of them will do 1080i (or 720p for that matter) till now. I think I heard mention of the Gamecube also doing HDTV support as well. Not sure.

We shall see how that compares with the Radeon PCs. 6 months though is a long wait. Those adaptors should cost more than the Xbox as the profit on those boxes are games. Still an option that will be more user friendly.

little piece of information for anyone that cares. MS loses $150 PER xbox sold. their business plan calls for a profit in 2005! that is dedication to the fans if i have ever seen it. hopefully pirated games do not hamper the profits that MS expects.

The Xbox uses the new NVidia (GeForce 3) chips for the video. So the upconversion should be very much like an NVidia based HTPC. My understanding is that the box will sell for $125 less than cost, as per standard practice in the gaming industry.

Seems like a fairly inexpensive way to get a progressive scan DVD player,/scaler.

Am I correct that GeForce still does not do interlaced? If so how the 1080i? On the other hand, if 1080i is true, should we see them in NVidia based PCs already?

They might try to sell the DVD Remote Kit for $299 if you don't do games http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif

If this is true I might just replace my DVD player with the game console. DVD's upconverted to 1080i should look pretty good. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I know the DVD enabling pack (remote with software and IR reciever is supposed to only run about 20-30 dollars. What we don't know yet is how much that HDTV output connector box is going to be. Somebody should try to find out. It sure is going to be a long 6 months. I called around today and nobody is taking pre-orders for the X yet.

Next week pre orders should start up again. Software ETC. at the Sunrise Mall, Sac, had to stop because they did not know how many Microsoft would ship in the fall, now they know up to 800,000. I have been on the www.ign.com forum talking about XBOX and 5.1 audio and HDTV support.

Test DRIVE is the first game that will have HDTV and Digital audio. You may want to voice you option to make sure that HDTV Games are there day one.

I'll be pre ordering my XBOX next week hopefully.

Kagato, Scaled up (like PS2 and Dreamcast) is not the same as high res - even if the Xbox only put out 480i, I could scale that with my scaler. What I was asking was whether the developers are developing games with the capability of creating more pixels - threads earlier* said that even though PS2 could output higher resolution Formats (480p or higher) the games didn't create the pixels, the unit scaled the same number of pixels - this is the difference between upconverts and true HD. Don't get me wrong, having the unit do the scaling makes life a lot simpler (especially if you don't have a scaler ! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif ) and enhances the experience compared to regular TV set but imagine a game which created 1280x720 REAL pixels (or even 800x600) .

*"The current software, and all future software at this point in time is interlaced. The vast majority of PS2 games that are available or in development run at 640 x 220 interlaced. There are some games that are going to run in High-Res at 640 x 480 interlaced, but they will still be interlaced. The PS2 does have Progressive display capabilities, even up to a resolution of 1280 x 1024, but for whatever reason, it appears they will never be used. Basically, what you get with the PS2, now and in the forseable future is, at the max 640 x 480 interlaced. "

So what outputs (480i, 480p 720p etc) will this item provide and are developers enabling them????

(Sorry, I haven't kept up with the hype and don't have a game machine - except my Mac - but might get interested especially if there will be hi-res games coming!)

Thanks

Andy
