I own two XBoxes. One is in the living room, the other is going into the theater. Can I use the same Live! account on each? I don't plan on ever using them at the same time.

Is this possible?

How can I do this?

Thanks

Yes as long as you don't use them at the same time. All you need is to purchase a memory card and save your xbox live account to it. You can then sign on to the second xbox using the memory card and on the first xbox, just sign in like you normally do.

It's good know that it CAN be done. However, that method is way too cumbersome. You should be able to sign onto any Xbox anywhere your account, like Steam or AOL.

It's not that cumbersome as once your account is on the memory card you can just plug it into a controller and go, no need to copy it to the hard drive. The other choice would be to use the "Recovery Account" option. But I believe you need the last 4 digits of the credit card used.

Can you give me more details on both versions of this:

1) Memory Card

2) Recover Account

Goal is to have it on the kids XBox in their "playroom", but also be able to play on Live! once they are asleep in the theater. The memory card option sounds good, but I would be concerned about the memory card getting lost or broken. What is option 2?

Thanks

The problem with that is you set your password with the controller, and I think you're only allowed to use up,down, left, right, trigger 1, trigger 2, X, Y, and A. It would be very very very very easy for people to guess other peoples password if you could just log into your account from anywhere. Its really simple to put your account info on a memory card and load it on another box. You might say "well why not have a login screen where you enter a more complex password on a keyboard interface" Well, then anyone playing with you would see your password. I think they way they do it now is the most logical way you could do it.

I don't have Live but why not leave the account permanently on each Xbox HD. Once you transfer it initially (either with a Mem Card or account recovery) it stays on there. You just can't use both Xboxes on Live at the same time. This seems like a pretty basic solution that requires zero maintenance.

If what you're saying about passwords is true, then there would be 6,561 possible passwords (9 to the 4 power). That does not sound easy to guess to me. The user could type their user name in via virtual keyboard. Piece of cake.

Again there's really no technical reason I can see not to have global access to Live. I suspect the problem stems from MS greed and paranoa. They want to discourage multiple people sharing the same account. In reality, if I could go over to someone's house that doesn't have Live, log in and show them how cool it is, that would be great advertising. When I host Halo LAN parties I am amazed at how many people have no clue about Live. It's not even on their radar screen. Perhaps this will change with Halo 2...

Well, I guess I need to get a memory card. I'll do it, but I'll resent doing it. ; )

ileff,

Yes, you can run two Live accounts at the same time with your router (keep in mind that cable Internet is 10 times faster, so I don't know how your DSL will perform...) You could have 28 Xboxes running Live in your house if you had the proper 28 port network switch.

And NO, it would be WILDLY INAPPROPRIATE to have a 7 year old on Xbox Live!!! Your child will be swearing like a sailor! The on-line games that are aimed at the younger kids (Midtown Madness 3) seem to have the worse behavior.

That being said, you need to play Box Live and get a feel for how things work before you can make a decision on when your kid should play online. It's a pretty good system with a Friends List so you can find good people to play with. I probably won't let my kid get play online until around the age 12 by herself, but I'll play online with her at younger ages with me there on the other Xbox with the Memory Card (that I was forced to buy because Bill Gates thinks I'm trying to rip him off).

It is actually very easy to guess Live account passwords, i've done it myself. I didnt play Live for over a year and I had no idea what my password was. I just started typing in random things like up, down, r, l, or y, x, b, up, etc. etc... it wasnt very long before i was able to figure it out. A friend of mine was also using my xbox when I was out of town once, he informed me when I got back he just typed in random button combos on the controller until he got it. If you had a big list of people's gamer tags it would be very easy to figure out their password by just typing in random codes with such few buttons. Espically since when you get a password wrong it usually immediatly lets you start over.

If you had a list of all 6,000 whatever possibilities it would only take you a few hours to figure out someones password if you were very dedicated to doing so (and a free XBL account would probably be worth it to many people). As opposed to the infinate amount of time it would take you to crack a password on a keyboard with every letter and number available to you plus possible # of characters typically ranging from 4 to whatever you want. So my point is, XBOX Live accounts would still be way too easy to crack.

ileff - the headset/mic is not required to play on Live. Simply don't let your kids use it and you shouldn't have a problem. There are a few games where the sound of people talking will come out of your TV's speakers if you dont have the mic plugged in, but this can be turn on/off in games. I lost my headset a long time ago so I never use it and I play on Live all the time, I find theres really no point in talking to people as they never have anything important to say, and in team based games no one really listens to each other anyway.

cable internet is 10 times faster than DSL? That's news to me.

I think its a good idea to have the account limited to one xbox or memory card. Think about it, if you could sign on to your account with just a password, you could have multiple people playing your account. With games like crimson skies you could have someone playing it 24/7 building up the stats for one account. This is a disadvantage to players who only have one person working on their stats.

The only way to do that now would be to give people your credit card number or have multiple people in the house on the same account. I don't think carrying a memory card to different xbox's is such a hassle. In fact, I think having to input a password everytime I log on Xbox live would be a bigger hassle.

That is sweet. I have Verizon and it sucks. 1.5mb down and 12.5k up for $35 (although their marketing is getting funky where they quote "up to 1.5mb down and up to 38.4" but in reality this statement on their ad for the $34 plan doesn't refer to the $34 plan but their entire range of small business and consumer DSL packages - read: major price hike for the upload piece of that quote. My neighbor's cable does 3.0 down and 38.4 up for a few dollars more. I need to look at changing ISPs.

Ok, idjit mode on. ;)

1. Ensure xbox is properly connected to a TV and both have power.

2. Turn on xbox via the eject button (or just make sure there's not a game inside) with a controller plugged into port 1.

3. Press B to back out from the Xbox Live! dashboard (you may have to press B twice).

4. Now that you're at the main Xbox screen select the Memory menu

5. Plug your memory card into the controller plugged into port 1.

6. Select the Xbox.

7. Scroll all the way down to "Xbox Live Accounts".

8. Select the account you want to copy by pressing right.

9. Press A.

10. Select copy.

11. Select your memory card (should already be selected).

12. Press A

13. Let it copy.

14. You're done.
