My xbox is slowly dying. I have a EB warranty so I am going to replace it but I have a couple of game files I would really like to save. The most important one to me is Knights of the Old Republic. The save file is 14,000 blocks. Does anyone know how I could get that save file over to my other Xbox? Can it be done via system link? The Knights game box does not indicate that I could use a memory card and I don't know how to convert blocks to MBs anyway. Any help would be appreciated!

OK Not a bad idea. It would be easier if I could find out how many blocks fit on a memory card and use that method, but if that doesn't work how do I get the cover off of my xbox? I don't see and screws.

Well, unfortunately I just got off the phone with the Xbox help line and they tell me the game will not fit on a 8mb memory card. So... unless someone has another idea I guess I try nothru22's. It seems like it should be doable with system link.

Jason, This device looks perfect! Do you have one? Have you ever bought anything from these guys? Reading the website it looks like all I would need is the device itself since I don't need to upload it to a pc. I just need to transfer it to another xbox and the doc says it looks just like a memory card to the xbox. Do you concur?

Sonyxbr ,

-- I have not purchased one from them but I did play around one day and build my own which worked great . I no longer have the device but I can tell you that it most certainly does work and it is very easy to use .

Are you sure? It doesn't say anywhere that you can save FROM the XBox to the device. In fact, it only seems to imply that you can transfer saves from a PC to the device, thence to the XBox (although I can't imagine what saves one would have on a PC that can then be played on an XBox...):

"Mega X-Key is a multifaceted product developed by Team X4 which unlocks the power of your XBox. It comes with loads of 'ready to go' game saves and cheats which can be managed using the included software. It serves as a "Mega" memory card with 32 MB of storage that plugs into the USB port of your PC and allows you to transfer Saves on your PC to the Mega X-Key. The Mega X-Key can then be connected to the XBox to load. "

well the one that I built allowed me to save games from the Xbox , it thought it was a memory card once plugged into the controller port . I did this back when the software had just become available to use a USB storage device with a custom built xbox-to-usb cable .

oh I don't dispute that. but I *think* an XBox game has to be programmed from the get-go to recognize a save card before it can actually even use or recognize one. KOTOR doesn't use save cards and writes directly to the XBox HD. I doubt it would even "see" any save card plugged in.

in any case, sonyxbr should check with the Mega X-Key mfr first before making the purchase. again, my immediate assumption is that if the game is configured to save to the HD only, it won't recognize any save card.

Well.. I did check with the guys at Mega x key and here is the response:

"Thats a tricky save to transfer since it (KOTOR) doesn't allow you to copy to a memory card. Also, there's is a dummy file in Star Wars thats very large and has nothing to do with the save.

If you have a modchip in the dying xbox, you can just ftp your E: over to the PC with Evox.

If you don't have a modchip, you can do it through megaxkey by running the 007/Mechassault Linux hack to move your save. I recommend visiting the forums at www.xbox-scene.com to learn more about these hacks."

I have no idea of how to do a Linux hack. I don't want to add a mod chip because then I won't be able to take it back to EB to exchange it for a non-failing xbox. Not sure where that leaves me.

Oh , I was not aware that KOTOR would not save to a memory card - sorry :( .

-- The hack is really not that tough to do and would not void any warranty but that is the only option that I see for you at this point if you have to keep your game save .

Thanks for help everyone! Jason, how do I learn about performing the hack. Is there somewhere that I could get detailed instructions or do I piece it together with different forum type responses.

Some interesting information... I tried swapping hard disks between my 2 xboxs last night and after I was done neither of them would boot. I swapped them back and they were fine. Anyone know why?

Try www.xbox-scene.com for all the info you need :) .

--- the hard drives will not work because they have keys that lock them down to each box [ there are ways around it however ;) ] .
