Xbox on Samsung 507

Does anyone have a suggesion for the best way to hookup an Xbox

to the Samsung 507. The component inputs are either 480i/480p

or 480p/720p/1080i. Since some games are 480i only, and others

support upto 1080i, it seems like I should connect to both input at the

same time?

Of course, the xbox HD output doesn't have dual outputs. Anyone know

where I can get a cheap decent HD video spliter? Or have a better way to hook these up?

Actually, all games are 480p at minimum, there for, if you do not have an HD Tunner, you will need to make the connection to the 480i/480p in puts (hopfully you have an AV receiver that you will make the connectons with). If you do have tunner, then you can take advantage of the games that will be more than 480p (Dragon Lair 3D will be 1080i when it is released; no other games really are more then 480p yet), in which case you will make the connection to the 720p/1080i inputs.

You will have to purchase the Xbox's HD AV Pack (NOT the AV Advanced pack (which is the one with the s-video port).

Next, plug in a game (PGR is a good one to test). Make sure you change the XBox settings in the menu to 480p. If the game is very dark, then you will have to make some SM tweaks on the Y, CR, and CB_Offsets.

This is almost true - there are a couple of early Xbox games that are 480i only.

Question: When you set the Xbox to 480p, does it include the dashboard? I intend to connect my Xbox to a 480p/720p/1080i input on my soon-to-arrive Samsung DLP also and would like to know if I need to have a 480i path as well.

Good question. I have heard that you do, but I can not verify as I do not have my HDTV Tunner yet. That would be kind of foolish if you did, but I know some other menus, like TV require a plain connection. What type of Tunner are you going to be using to hook your XBox to the DLP? I am looking at the Samsung SIR-T151.

I read about a hack to the X-box to make the dashboard 480P somewhere, I don't have one, so I did not pay attention to it, just a note, if I find it, will post the info.

Hey KenCarlini -

I have an xbox and am thinking of the 507 - can you clear up something in your post for me?

Do you mean that the 507 has seperate inputs for interlaced and progressive? You mentioned having a receiver with the jacks will help, what did you mean by this? I was hoping that my receiver, which will switch component video, would let me use 480P quality on the xbox. That way I could run the DVD right to the TV and everything else via the receiver to the TV with component and S-video cables.

Does that make sense?

Thanks!

It makes sence. The 507 has three inputs, 480i/480p (1), 720p/1080i (2). The later are only for inputs from a HDTV Tunner. You can hook the XBox to the AV receiver using component (I hook the Xbox and DVD to my AV and us it to switch between the two (both are component to the 480i/480p input jacks on the TV)).

In your first thread, you mentioned using the XBox in 720p (or higher) mode. To do this, you will need the HDTV tunner. In either case, you will need the HD AV Pack for the XBox which includes component video (the AV Advance pack only includes S-Video and can not be used for anything higher than 480i).

I hope this clears things up a bit. Again, it may get a bit more intense if you choose to purchase an HDTV tunner (I plan I getting on in January).

More info on modding your xbox, there is a solderless chip out there but it will not work with new xbox's as MS changed the MB some. The best way to use it would be to purchase a new hard drive to store your non-xbox-live games on and simply swap out the hard drives and flip a switch on the mod chip when you have to go online. And before anyone flames me yes this is possible and no I do not condone software piracy. If you like the game enough to play it, then buy it.

The main advantage I see to having a modded xbox is hte ability to copy your games to the HD for faster load times and the ability to enable progressive scan output for DVD movies. People can PM me for more info and I'll gladly give some advice.

Plug an XBox directly into C2 or C3 and tell me if it works. As I understand it, you will get a message that says something like "uncompatable signal". If you plug the Xbox into it via an HDTV Tunner, it will work.

The difference between the three connections are as follows (as described by Samsung Steve):

Here's the difference. We dedicated this input for DVD players to allow for aspect ratio adjustments and video processing via 480i. In CV1, you can adjust for Zoom 1 and 2. In the CV2 and CV3 inputs, you cannot.

The CV1 input auto switches as follows:

480i goes through the Faroudja processor, 480P does not.

The system settings you make for RF, video, s-video, and CV1 will hold as one setting, based on the last adjustment. CV2 and CV2 inputs are the second level of settings, DVI the third, and PC the fourth level that the set's memory will hold. While this doesn't address individual output differences across several NTSC inputs and the corresponding video 1, s-video and CV1, the service menu does allow to adjust CV1 separately. This will only need to be performed if the user menu settings won't address things. In this case, I recommend an ISF certified specialist to perform these adjustments, although, I've read on the forum about those who've gone in an found good results by themselves. An ISF technician will customize the settings for your viewing habits, room light and selection of components that make up your system.

This doesn't have anything to do with whether the inputs take 480p or not. I don't even have the set or an Xbox yet, but my understanding is that the Xbox forces you to use 480i on some screens, including the dashboard. So running it through another box is simply converting it to some other format before it gets to the TV, it doesn't mean the Xbox isn't going back and forth between 480i/480p/720p/1080i. Actually, this might be a good workaround for the silly design choice Samsung made on this set. But many of us won't have external tuners that don't have inputs for Xbox.

I'll be... I plugged my XBox directly into C2 and I did receive the "unsupported signal" as expected, but this time I went a bit farther by inserting a game. It worked. That is pretty lame that they don't allow the dashboard to be viewed in 480p at least. The SM tweaks that I had to make on C1 (because everything was so dark) were not needed at all on C2; the games (DOA, PGR, and Halo) looked great!

I have to rethink my connections now. I don't want to use the TV as a switcher between components (that's why I bought an AV receiver), but it looks like I may have too for now.

Since the dash is 480i you won't be able to see it at all, but any 480p games should display just fine. I think it's really lame that the dash won't scan prgressivly.

BTW can you give me some input on how the TV handles games. That is really the most important thing for me, are the games rainbowish at all (since you do a lot of looking around the screen during games).

I too am really interested in hearing a review on how well either the Samsung 507 or 437 do with games and other fast-motion.

I've taken our new DLP front projector home a few times when I have buddies over for Halo-a-thons. There's nothing better than crystal clear Halo to the tune of about 90 inches! :D

Played a little Crazy Taxi on the 507 last night using DreamCast at 640x480 VGA.

We did it specifically as a fast motion test. We wanted to see if some of the digital artifacts were in the source or created by the 507.

The 507 kept up incredibly well and little to no motion artifacting was seen no matter how fast we went/turned.

Awesome.

Wow. I am thoroughly confused. Here is the TV I recently purchased. http://www.crutchfield.com/cgi-bin/S...fo&i=15843HT20

I want to hook my Xbox up so that I receive the best picture. I do not have an HDTV tuner, so I am assuming that my best resolution will be 480p. I have already purchased the Xbox HD AV Pack.

My question is in regards to setting up my Xbox/TV. It seem like I should I shouldn't have to do anything to my TV, only my Xbox. I don't specifically recall the setting I enabled in my Xbox (seems like it was 480p). However, I am having no problems seeing my dashboard. Does this mean I am not actually displaying at 480p? I have been playing MechAssault, Splinter Cell, and HALO for the most part.

Truth is, I don't have the faintest idea what the difference between 480p and 480i is. I just want to make sure that I am using the full extent of my toys. Anyone have recommendations for my circumstance?

It's been suggested before that a good way to hook the Xbox up to your Samsung DLP is to go ahead and hook it into one of the 480p/720p/1080i component inputs and hook your old RCA Xbox connector to a set of RCA inputs (which will show the 480i dashboard) while leaving the unplugged Xbox end of that cord near your Xbox. That way, on the few occasions when you have to mess with the dashboard, you can just quickly switch the one cable at the back of the Xbox instead of messing around with the back of the t.v. That's I'm going to do tonight with my HLM437W anyway (which arrived today!).

The XBox is a bit of a pain with my 507. Our Xbox is moved from room to room (to be hooked to my children's TVs), so it doesn't stay plugged into power near my 507. Therefore I need to enter the dashboard whenever we want to play on the 507 & set the XBox for the HDTV settings. When hooked up via composite cables, the options aren't there for 480P, 720P, 1080i, widescreen, etc.

So.... if I want to play a 720P game, I have to hook the XBox to component 1 (480i, 480P) to set the dashboard options, then I have to disconnect from component 1 & then connect to component 2 or 3 to play the game.

Is there a better way to achieve this, other than a component switcher?

I just want to clarify terms here.

Are the following statements correct? The dashboard is the screen you have when no game is in the xbox or the CD tray is open. As soon as a game is inserted you get 480p screens unless the game is 720p or above. Only a few older games were 480i. Is this correct?

#23 ·
Yes the dashboard is the screen you get when nothing is in the tray. It only displays in 480i. If you leave the Xbox unplugged for a while you have to reset the time clock. If that happens and you have it in either component 2 or 3 input on the 507 then you cannot see the 480i dashboard. Now you can just press the Dpad down and mash the A button a few times any maybe get lucky and bypass the dashboard. I use component 1 as I have no 720p/1080i games yet. You can I suppose put a Y splitter on the Green component cable and send a signal to Video 1 composite input to view the dash. Hitman a pretty new game is 480i so i don't think its a hard fact all newer games must support 480p.

I don't think you have to set it up for 480p/720p/1080i each time just set the dash to the highest display rate your set can handle. checked all 3 for the 507. But the clock must be set if you are powered off for a while (see post below). I leave my component cables in the 507 and have an Xbox s-video cable hooked to the bedroom tv. Try the Y cable (next post) trick and see if that helps

You don't have to change the 480p/720p/1080i options every time the XBOX is unplugged. It saves that info on the harddrive. So you would only have to do it once. I have my XBOX connected to the HD input only on my Sony 57XBR2, and can see the dashboard. So I believe you don't need another connection to see the dashboard.
