Xbox360 into HDMI?

1102 Views 11 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Darkmatter
I've got a TV that has a HDMI input but no VGA input and i don't have a 360 yet. It seems clear from what i've read an seen that, in general, video signals through a VGA adapter are "better" than those through component cables. It's nice that there is a VGA adapter available for the 360, but its too bad my tv cannot take advantage of this...or can it?

Contemplate the following connection scenario:

(Xbox360) --> (MS VGA adapter) [male] --> [female](VGA to DVI adapter)[male] --> [female](DVI to HDMI adapter)[male] --> [female](TV HDMI input)

I really don't know if this would even work. I've heard of people using an expensive transcoder for something like this and so I wonder why anyone would buy an expensive transcoder if this could be achieved with a few relatively inexpensive adapters. If the connection did work it would probably look horrid due to all the interconnects but it's an interesting thought anyway. Can anyone shed any light on this idea?

I'm pretty sure the VGA>DVI adapter is VGA to DVI-Analog.

Likewise, a DVI to HDMI adpapter is DVI-Digital to HDMI.

Being passive adpaters, there's nowhere in your chain that actually changes the analog output from the Xbox360 to a digital input for the HDMI port. I could be wrong, but I think that your example, though you can physically make the connections, won't work.
My suggestion is try out the component cables first with your set first. Everyones set is different and the component cables may work just as good if not better than the VGA given the other factors in your room.

Edited based on Lee's input about analog to digital.
Well that wouldn't really work since a VGA to DVI adaptor only works for an analog signal. Since HDMI is purely digital their is no way to convert a VGA signal to HDMI besides using an expensive transcoder. Personally I would just recommend the component video output.
Thanks for the info Lee. I knew i had to be missing someting. I guess i didn't know about the distinction between DVI digital and DVI analog do they use the same pins? This makes me wonder if my PC video card is outputting DVI digital or DVI analog since i know i can use the VGA adapter with it.
Nope. Different pins, same connector. There's also DVI-I (integrated), that can carry both.

Doesn't matter, the 360 doesn't have digital sound. It's analog from what I have read.

Where the hell did that comment come from?

The Xbox 360 supports ingame Dolby Digital 5.1 and has a digital-optical TOSLINK output built into the cables. That digital enough for ya?

that was quite possibly one of the most off-the-wall comments i've ever read.

and by the way, the 360 has no sound output at all, the only audio comes from a 0.2 watt internal mono speaker that can only play MIDI

I can confirm this does NOT work. I tried this using a Monoprices DVI -> HDMI cable, the MS VGA cable(plus the included female to female VGA adapter), and a PrimeLogic DVI Female to HD15 VGA Male adapter. My 32" Philips LCD would not recognize an input signal.
