xbr2 Dead?

1133 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Coastal
I have had the kdl 40 xbr2 since Sept.It worked great till late Feb.At that time the screen froze and turned flourescent green when my cable box(Sci Atlantic )would feed it thru HDMI.This was the case on all 3 HDMI inputs.I changed cable boxes 3 times and HDMI cables twice. No help.It worked great with the cable box and component cables and thru the QAM tuner.

Well yesterday that changed. Now the picture freezes and turns bright green thru component,QAM and even with DVD.It will play a picture for about 10 minutes before this happens.

Any ideas,or do I have a lemon?

The tech wants to take it for repair mid week.

Thank you

In my opinion, it sounds like you have a bad set. Personally, I wouldn't allow a repair tech to take my display off-site for repair. I would demand that all work be done on-site, especially for a display that is still under warranty. There's too much risk for damage while the display is in-transit.
I've been having similar problems with my new 40" XBR2. It had been working fine since I got it last December, but two weeks ago all of the inputs started displaying various solid or flashing colours. Oddly, I still got sound from the various inputs, and the TV's menu system still worked fine.

I called the Sony Store where I bought the set, and they sent a tech around to have a look the same day. He fiddled with the remote for a few minutes and then everything went back to normal! No more display problems were visible at all.

The repair-guy felt that this input issue could become an intermittent problem, though, so he said he'd order a new video processor for the set. I'm still waiting to hear from him two weeks later, but in the meantime my XBR2 has indeed been having more "issues" with its inputs on an intermittent basis as he predicted. If and when the tech installs the new processor, I'll let you know if it resolves this issue.

My TV was manufactured in July 2006, by the way, if that's relevant. Perhaps ours were part of a faulty production run?

By the way... Does anybody know if components in these XBR LCDs can be replaced while the TV is in an upright position on its stand? I'm a bit concerned that the repair-guy will try to lay it flat on our floor and do more harm than good in the process...

I am worried that the unit will be damaged in transit.

I will call Sony and ask their tech if they have heard of this issue.

My sound and volume also work normally when this happens.
I called Sony last night. They put me in touch with a repair company(different from the one the electronics store recommended).

The new company will send a tech and do repair in my house.

I will let you know how it goes.

Does a tv like this have a video card like a computer does?

If it does, that very well may be the problem.

I'm hoping that it'll be simply a matter of replacing a faulty circuit board with a new one, but I'm not really sure.

By the way, I'm glad you were able to secure in-home service. I wouldn't like the idea of them carrying an expensive piece of AV equipment like that out the door either!

I hope everything works out okay for you. Let us know what happens, and I'll keep you posted on my situation as well

Repair guy is coming tomorrow. He called Sony and is bringing 2 parts.

I'll let you know if it works.
The repair guy came today. When I got home he had the TV face down on towels already apart.

He changed a QM and BE2 Board.

It now works again.
