A couple of days ago, my 60XBR950 would not come on because, according to the blinking lights and the manual, the lamp cover was not securly fastened. This was surprising as I had never had cause to remove or even touch the lamp cover previously. Upon inspection of the lamp cover I discovered to my horror that it had been deformed/melted from the heat of the lamp (see pic).

My fans are running when I turn the TV on and continue to run for some time after the TV is turned off, as the manual says they should.

Fortunately, the TV is under warranty and is being picked up for repair tomorrow. I sure hope that the root cause is found and corrected - I will post a follow up.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced such a problem (check your lamp covers!).

Thanks.

There are actually four fans in the '950, and one of them is mounted directly above the lamp. It is no doubt the one which stopped, and you can still hear the others. I can really only hear the big one in back on my set.

So Sony is saying (through the authorized service center, which is not Sony) that the lamp cover must have been improperly placed thus affecting the airflow. The only thing that they are replacing is the melted lamp cover.

I am having a hard time believing that the lamp cover is the only problem here. Not sure what to do next.

I would have a hard time with that as well. Why did the TV not go into a diagnostic fault condition if the lamp cover was not positioned properly before? There is a switch that must be closed for this not to happen.

The other strange thing is that a fan fault should also have caused a fault condition.

It seems wrong that this door melted and a fault was not detected. That is the purpose of the protection circuitry in these sets. I would mention to Sony that you will hold them responsible if the TV catches on fire and they do nothing, but replace the cover.
