That's the only mode I know that has zero lag. What I have noticed is that in 480p, stretched (16:9) adds quite a bit of lag over 4:3 mode, enough to make games I played on an SD CRT without lag unenjoyable. 4:3 in 480p has very little lag from what I can remember. Never played on 720p enough to give you an idea on that..
I have one of the cheaper Hi-scan models, though I'm pretty sure they use a lot of the same electronics. Was kind of disappointed when I found all this out, I bought it naively believing it wouldn't have lag in any mode. I have a program on my PS2's memory card that allows you to play every game upscaled to 1080i, with varying success. And if you're playing with a 360, then you're in luck because I'm pretty sure everything can be upscaled to 1080i on that system. PS3's kind of a ***** though.
