Does anyone know the input lag measurements for the XBR960 at 1080i, 720p, 480p and 480i? Are all of those resolutions supported natively or are some of them upscaled?


I know that you can eliminate all lag in 1080i mode by disabling HDPT, turning digital to analog.

That's the only mode I know that has zero lag. What I have noticed is that in 480p, stretched (16:9) adds quite a bit of lag over 4:3 mode, enough to make games I played on an SD CRT without lag unenjoyable. 4:3 in 480p has very little lag from what I can remember. Never played on 720p enough to give you an idea on that..


I have one of the cheaper Hi-scan models, though I'm pretty sure they use a lot of the same electronics. Was kind of disappointed when I found all this out, I bought it naively believing it wouldn't have lag in any mode. I have a program on my PS2's memory card that allows you to play every game upscaled to 1080i, with varying success. And if you're playing with a 360, then you're in luck because I'm pretty sure everything can be upscaled to 1080i on that system. PS3's kind of a ***** though.

How does one get HDPT working on this TV?


I'm not asking how to get into the service menu and change the setting.
Isn't the tweak intended for older Sony tubes?

When I try it with my XS955, the OSD appears to lose "horizontal hold", and a few seconds later so does the rest of the image.

Does that mean that all widescreen formats (Full , Zoom , Wide Zoom , Normal) introduce lag?

In 480p, yes. I think they do all the stretching digitally, so it takes processing time. Normal (4:3) seemed to have less lag than full. It wasn't enough to make Mario Galaxy unplayable, but it was for Wipeout Pulse on PS2.

720p has some lag to it. Small amount, though. Pretty much same as 480p. I own a PS3, and a lot of games only do 720p, so I have to use that resolution. Obviously I'll take upscaled 1080i when it's available, since having no lag whatsoever is nice. Too bad you can't do the HDPT thing for 720p.


360 is able to upscale everything, so it's a shame the PS3 can't.

From what I've read in digging through these forums, is that all the Sony tube HDTV's display everything in 1080i/540p. In 480p, they just display every line on a 540p image and zoom in a little. In 720p they have to downscale to 1080i. 480i, they line double for 480p.

So how much lag would there be for a 540p source converted to an 1080i analog signal with the HDPT turned off?

What kind of source would that be? If it receives a 540p signal, it will display that with no conversion. 540p and 1080i have the same scan rate. From what I gather, HDPT off means the signal will go through some digital processing. Not sure what that processing does, but it's there.

I meant HDPT turned on to produce a lagless analog singal.


So 540p = 480p on this set? And there is no conversion or scaling from 540p to 1080i?


Theoretically, there wouldn't be any input lag if I played the Wii at 480p (540p) on 1080i mode with a pure analog signal.
