XBR960 vs XS955 vs HS420 - Which one do I want?

1830 Views 11 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Delhux
I have a question and I hope I can gain some insight from those who clearly know more than I do in this forum.

If you can imagine for a moment all things being equal, which (factory refurbished) TV would you rather own:

• XBR960

• XS995

• HS420

I understand that the 960 has super fine pitch picture tube and seems to be extremely desirable, but I am unclear as to the benefits of the XS995 or HS420.

Any clarity would be GREATLY appreciated.

The xs955 has the superfine pitch tube as well, the hs420 does'nt however if that's a deal breaker to you?
It is good to know the XS955 has the SFP as well.

What would be the difference between the XBR960 and XS955? Quality? Inputs? Technology?
A few bells and whistles, minor stuff really..no difference in PQ what so ever.
I've read through some material on the forums, and it seems a lot of people rave about the 960. But I don't know if one is newer than the other, or which one is consider better or an "upgrade" from the other.
the xs955 really is'nt that different than the xbr960, if i had to choose i woold probably choose the xs955 since i've heard a lot of people have had issues with the xbr960's and i have heard very few with the xs955's.

Just my .02
The 420 is a monitor--no HDTV tuner.

Good point!.. but not neccessary if you already have an HD cable box.
Well, I went out and got myself a refurb XBR960 from the local Sony outlet store.

I figured the number of issues reported is probably only proportional to the number of owners of the set, so I am none too concerned. Plus, I picked up the 5-year Sony in-home warranty--with any luck, I'll never need it.

I have yet to set it up or turn it on. That's for tomorrow after I get a new TV bench from iKea and perhaps a DVI to HDMI cable for my Comcast (Motorola) DVR. I have my DVD and DVR currently hooked up via component and I am curious to see if the DVI/HDMI will actually look any better.

Even though I haven't turned it on yet, I'm feeling pretty confident about my purchase. Wish me luck tomorrow!
Make sure the IKEA has no issues with 300 lbs. The TV has broken more than one stand not made for it - and damaged the TV on the way down - something your 5 year warranty will not cover.

Wow. Are there any forum threads that discuss that? I'd be interested to know the max weight (load) rating for the stand and what was on it.
I called the Sony outlet I bought the TV from, and they say they sell stands, but not the matching ones. I asked if they were stands they use for demo purposes, and they said yes.

The thing is, I think they are using iKea TV benches. I swear that they are EXACTLY, I mean EXACTLY identical to the IKEA Stormark TV bench.

That bench is rated for 220lbs. It strikes me as close, plus I'll need to put the receiver, DVR, and DVD underneath it.

The receiver has a modest amount of weight to it, but the other two devices are quite light. I may just go with the Stromark, as it appears to be what the Sony outlet is using.
