XM Radio Suspends Opie & Anthony...

7457 Views 124 Replies 25 Participants Last post by  RaveD
WASHINGTON and NEW YORK, May 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- XM Radio announced today that the company has suspended Gregg "Opie" Hughes and Anthony Cumia, hosts of "The Opie & Anthony Show" and ceased broadcast of the show for 30 days, effective immediately.

XM Radio deplored the comments aired on "The Opie & Anthony Show" last week. At the time, the company strongly expressed its views to Opie and Anthony, and they issued an immediate apology.

Comments made by Opie and Anthony on yesterday's broadcast put into question whether they appreciate the seriousness of the matter. The management of XM Radio decided to suspend Opie and Anthony to make clear that our on-air talent must take seriously the responsibility that creative freedom requires of them.

As a company, XM provides customers with tools to control what they listen to on XM. "The Opie & Anthony Show" appears on one of XM's explicit language channels (XL). Whenever a radio is tuned to an explicit language channel, the letters "XL" continuously appear on the screen. XM frequently mentions on its explicit language channels that the content may be inappropriate for certain listeners and tells how to "block" channels that feature this type of content. Channel blocking is available through xmradio.com or by calling 1-800-XMRADIO.

I'd love to **** that *****. She needs a ****ing man," said "Homeless Charlie."

Co-host Anthony Cumia interrupted to say he "could just imagine the horror on Condoleezza Rice's face when she realized that you were holding her down and ****ing her."

"Punching her in the ****ing face and ****ing her," Charlie added, laughing

You're an idiot. Always have been. YES! Watered down airwaves!! Finally we're getting what we want in AMERICA.

30 Days of Ron and Fez is a small price to pay if we can win the bigger battle here and that's THE RIGHT TO LISTEN TO WHAT WE WANT--especially on a medium not funded by advertisers and corporate america, but rather by the listeners--the SUBSCRIBERS--the FREE MARKET.

Get a clue... www.peopleagainstcensorship.com
Word is coming down from the OWNER of wackbag (Zagman) that Opie and Anthony have been FIRED from XM radio!!!

this is an unconfirmed rumor....
doubt they would get fired without a warning....

HAHAHA Now that IS funny! You certainly proved you're not a fan of the show with that statement I'll give you that much.
Wow. Way to support your talent, XM. O&A fans should know by now the show is a ticking time bomb. But this is some serious bs. If they cancel O&A, my subscription cancellation will follow.
Now this little bit of info(and IT IS AN OPINION. HOWARD STERN'S OPINION) comes from the HS Show on Monday 5/15:

He felt that what they did was not wrong, but not bright either. He felt that even though they didn't say it, they should have AT LEAST said, "Hey we don't condone what you are saying" at the least.

Plus he felt this is what the company they signed with, CBS/Clear Channel, do to acts that aren't doing what they feel they should be doing with regards to generating revenue. They look for a CHEAP **** WAY OUT of the current contract, so they don't have to pay them. Go to court, at a huge expense to the artist/artists, and hope they buckle. He, of course, has been through this before with them, and he said he felt that htey may use this opportunity to dump them.

Again, THIS IS ALL CONJECTURE on his part, or anyone else at this point.

I personally think it is BS, and will continue to feel that way.

But I do have one question to anyone who listens to their show:

WHEN did this happen in their radio program? Did it occur in their FREE RADIO hours, or on their exclusive XM radio spot?

If it happened on their exclusive XM radio spot, then I am REALLY PISSED that they got suspended at all. That is what a PAY SERVICE is all about. But that is what happens if you get in bed with CBS/Clear Channel/Infinity these days unfortunately.

I think XM is just cleaning house in preparation for Howard to take over their channels.

It was definitely during the XM-only portion of the show. The next day they did play some Homeless Charlie audio on the CBS side, but it was not this bit, nor any bit that would have got them in trouble so this is an XM-only situation.

it happened on the XM show early last week...i think it was Tuesday. They then apologized at the start of the show i think it was Thursday.

and i would'nt be surprised at all if Howard had something to do with this.....at least maybe him convincing some of the "higher ups" to get rid of them....he's tried to shut them down before.....and i don't put it beyond him having done it again.

Now this is going to be harsh:

This is what a LOSER sounds like. Blaming someone else for their problems. I think these two are smart enough to realize what is going on, and it has nothing to do with Howard.

This may be the first volley by CBS/Clear Channel/XM to get out of their contract with them because they never generated the revenue they thought they would when they came over to free radio for the first three hours. They realize they are paying too much for their services, and want to get out.

And here is an out. I think it is BS. Contracts in the US anymore I guess don't mean much of anything. Unless of course it is some poor schlub who signs for a mortgage/student loan that they either can;t afford to pay, or will be paying it off forever(especially a student loan). Miss a payment on those types of contracts, and you are screwed.

But I guess big corporations/enteties don't have to honor THEIR CONTRACTS.

Total BS if that is what is in store over the next month.

Stay tuned. The end of this story is FAR from over.

If anyone is interested in hearing the infamous show in its entirety, which was hysterical by the way, go the the following link:

I've been on hold with XM Radio for over 20+ minutes in an attempt to cancel my subscription over this non sense.
I'm on hold now, waiting to cancel my XM in light of this. I have 5 radios on my account.

what the hell are you talking about???

all i said is i would'nt be surprised if he had some influence....meaning if it came out some time down the road THAT I WOULD'NT BE SURPRISED....that's all it means.

i did'nt say he DID have something to do with it.
Whether you are an Howie fan or an O&A fan, this should be pretty scary/disappointing. If XM folds to pressure and suspends or possibly fires O&A, it sets a pretty bad precedent. And you have to wonder who is next or at least how does it affect the artistic freedom of the show you listen to.
I was on the phone for over an hour trying to cancel. I felt so bad when the customer service rep, with a heavy Spanish accent picked up the other line. XM had outsourced their service to Panama.

After debating with him in Spanish the pros and cons of free speech, I felt really bad when he said that the fallout would hurt a lot of their jobs. He had no idea who O&A really were but said that American media is absurd with the things that they deem important. I couldn't agree with him more but unfortunately, even after our rapport, I had to cancel.

Damn Mel Karmazin and XM brass in general...
