Don't shoot me if this has been answered before. I really did search for it.

Is there a way for a Windows XP Media Center PC to directly play a TV file recorded by Windows 7 Media Center? Perhaps a codec or a certain player has the capability to do it?

Not that I know of, the .wtv format is a W7 exclusive.

Actually I think the TV pack for Vista is where the .wtv format was first introduced.

I'm not aware of anything that would allow XP to play .wtv natively but they are pretty easy to convert to dvr-ms.

In Windows 7 Explorer, right click on the .wtv file. You should have a menu option for convert to DVR-MS. Convert, then it should play in Win XP...

The problem with that is that it takes 45mins to do it.

Is there a faster way?

Out of curiousity, what are you using to convert? On my system it looks like the conversion time is limited by the Harddrive more than anything else. A typical 1 hour show takes 3-5 minutes tops, depending on whether anything else is accessing the drive repeatedly during the conversion.
