XP18n in the IMAX: What screen does IMAX use?

266 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  KBK
I had the opurtunity to test an XP18n on an IMAX screen just to get an idea of how bright our video conferencing system would need to be.

To achieve 10 ft-L with the XP18n, I was guessing that I would need to project on to an area no larger than 200 Square feet which works out to be about 16' X 12'. But to demo that size image, I would need to have been half way up the theater seats which would have been awkward for a presentation. So, I gave the back row a chance thinking to myself, "if I can even see the image, I would be lucky."

Wow! was I ever wrong. I projected a nice and bright image that was 40 feet by 30 feet wide. People, that is 1200 square feet or 1.4 ft-L if it was on a unity gain screen! But it couldn't have been that dark, there is just no way. It appeared much brighter than my UP-1100 which projects in my dark HT room on a 28 square foot screen which is probably somewhere in the low 20 ft-L area.

Anyway, they have to be using some gain, but due to the curved screen surface they can get away with it without any hotspotting and still have holes for the speakers.

bottom line: Does anyone know what screen fabric they use?

The demo went great. I thought we would have to get a double stack of Proxima 9410AV's; but now I know one will be more than enough.

As I said in Brett's screen thread, I'm getting some very interesting screen material coming in.

My samples are not that far off unity, and they are a touch yellow...

I'll save you the trouble..

-------------------------------------

The company that sells this stuff (for pro-industrial use) is out of the province of Quebec, in Canada. They manufacture all of the IMAX screens. I wanted a sample of a manufacturer's product, and they referred me to these guys.

The manufacturer -of the vinyl I am looking at- had no other samples other than the small swatch they sent me. I was looking at getting a bunch as a supply for you folks when you buy screen paint, and then I have a quality vinyl to reccommend, and to sell you. The perforated stuff they supply is probably too improperly perforated for home screens. It was designed for maximum theatre IMAX set-ups, so the perforation size will definitely be off for almost all other use. Get a sample before you try and use this stuff for home theater.

Try not to irritate these folks with bizzare little questions. They are NOT your HT helping hand, they just manufacture and sell screen material. Keep it simple and clean, and they will continue to supply a smaller market.

I have to buy at the same place to get a sample of the vinyl product. That's their street price, I understand. And, that is in Canadian dollars.

That's MDI Cinema. Can't remember their number off hand.

If you tested your projector on an IMAX screen that is setup to show 3D then the screen is a Silver Hi-Gain with a gain between 4.0 and 6.0. If it was a regular IMAX screen (white) then the gain would be around 2.0.

Lee
Our IMAX is non-3D. Thanks Lee.
