Yamaha 663 - Need help!

1589 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  imeridian
I just setup my Yam 663 and have a few ?s:

- the lights on the front panel for speakers are only an indication of what is coming in, not what is going out? correct? i have a 5.1 setup but see all 7.1 lit when playing PS3 and Blue-ray.

- since i only have 5.1, is there anything i need to do to tell the recvr this or just it just know based on wires connected to posts on the back?

- the subwoofer is really pissing me off. got the Aperion Bravus 8D and this is what happens. when listening to something at a semi-low level the sub stops reproducing bass intermittently. i talked to the people at Aperion and they suggested that i turn the gain down on all speakers and boost the gain on the sub. this seems to have helped a little but not a 100% fix. how can i make it so the sub will produce bass ALL THE TIME? is this even possible with a pre-out setup to an active sub? i am thinking yes since i never had this issue with my old kenwood amp and my yam sub.

thx in advance for any help you can provide. - neil

Turn rear speakers to off/none in the setup menu.

boosting gain in the receiver for sub does help, which you've done. However, there's just some material out there (I think of TV) that has hardly any bass material. Even some dialogue based movies too.

Sometimes, Im guessing, having a sub that stays on longer (longer duration before auto shut-off) might help.

Or, you can just manually turn on/off sub. Forgetting about auto.

Or, just return the sub.

wouldn't turning off the rears be silly if i wanna watch a 5.1 movie? or are you saying as a test?

my situation isn't an auto vs on thing. i have it set to on and it still will cut out when i lower the volume or the bass in the audio is not prominent enough.
"rears" designate the 6th and 7th speakers.

what's your x-over point set to?
Have you run YPAO? Do that before any other troubleshooting steps.

I'm sure the poster meant the rear surrounds, which aren't present in 5.1 (surrounds in 5.1 would be referred to as 'side surrounds' when in 7.1 setup), which is why they ought to be turned off, but YPAO will detect if you have those speakers or not and act accordingly.

It seems the subwoofer issue is possibly one of the crossover being set incorrectly, or more plausible, your front speakers are set to "LARGE" which is a "bad thing" for subwoofer bass. The manual will explain how to make those changes.

He's referring to the surround back speakers, the 2 that are the difference between 5.1 and 7.1. See user's manual p.86.

I'm no expert in this. Maybe try playing with the LFE/bass out (p.85) and front speakers size (p.86) settings? I somehow recall that setting the front to small helps redirect all bass to sub.
rather than starting a new thread, might have better luck if you posted this in the 663 thread
i tried to find a specific 663 thread but didn't see one. how do you find thread based on models?

i have the fronts set to "small" as do i have for the center. the LFE/Bass is set to "SWFR". Sur. B L/R to "NONE". Crossover 80 (maxed crossover on sub to 150hz).

Levels as follows:

Fronts +2db

Center +3db

Surrounds +6db

Sub +9db

Aperion suggests not using YPOA but rather setting it manually based on SPL meter. (haven't gotten that far yet)

thx, neil

Do you have the gain on the sub set around the middle? Perhaps you should set it higher (and decrease it on the receiver accordingly), sort of seems like it's not "hearing" the bass when the receiver's volume is turned down, so upping the gain might help that.
GO setup --> speaker sets --> set both front and bass,

it should be okay~

Sending the bass to both the fronts and the subwoofer will not solve the problem, though it might mask it somewhat. I recommend against it.
