I am going to get a new a/v receiver since my old Technics power supply got messed up by lightning during a bad storm a few weeks back. I am looking on Ebay and found the HTR 5740 and 5640. My budget is tight since my mom is buying it for me for Christmas...I wish I would have jumped on the HTR 5650 the other day, but I forgot about the auction and when I remembered it it was over and ended at 86 bucks...with remote and manual...I wanted to know if there was any difference between the 5640 and 5740. The auction for the 5740 ends in a little over 5 hours.
I am doing that now..I have read some good reviews on the HTR 5740...it sure does more than my old Technics did..which was a few years old...I Googled reviews on the Yamaha and got lucky and found these forums which I have been reading all day...I read the online manual for the 5740 and I can understand most of it. I read reviews where people said the manual left a little bit to be desired, but since I have had my Technics, I can understand some of it. Probably gonna be trial and error until it gets right.
Yeah I did that already...I found good quality image of it on yamaha site...looking at the rear panel...it has no digital output, not sure if that matters but it does have a digital input..That's what I had my dvd player hooked into on my Technics since no optical cable...I just recently found out about the s-video in the back of the digital cable box,(duh) and the spdif coaxial cable....I have s video hooked up to the back of my Hitachi rear projection tv to the box and the audio from the s video cable hooked up to both as well. Don't care if this doesn't have s-video since my tv has it...For digital 5.1 I guess I can plug the coaxial calbe from the cable box into the digital input and switch my cable box audio for 5.1 digital...Not sure about the settings on the receiver yet for that, but I read about an auto setting..anyone have this receiver or one like it with an auto setting to sound for certain inputs or whatever...? One otherthing...I read on Amazon's review of this receiver thet it has Composite-video to S-video upconversion...what is that? I see one plug on the back for tv video and wondered if it an rca plug, which it looks like...just curious
