Yamaha RX-V1800 Can it downconvert 7.1 to 5.1

Hi guys,

Can the Yamaha RX-V1800 downconvert 7.1 or 6.1 PCM to 5.1 without losing any information?

I'm thinking of setting up a new system in a room where 7.1 is not feasible. IF the Yamaha can't do this please suggest a receiver in the same price class that can.

For Blu-Ray, both the 5.1 and 7.1 mixes are complete and include the surround info intended by the author. In TrueHD, the 7.1 mix is assembled from the 5.1 mix by adding 2 more channels, plus modifying the content of the basic 5.1 channels as well [dts-MA probably does something 'equivalent'.] The 7.1 'expansion' can include info NOT present in the 5.1 mix, e.g., height detail, but this material was never intended for the 5.1 mix. The 5.1 mix is always complete.

I don't think I can answer your question 100%. We are talking about HDMI here, I believe. There's supposed to be an HDMI handshaking operation where the receiver tells the player how many channels you have. The question comes down to whether the receiver tells the player you have 5.1, or not. If it tells the player you have 5.1, what will the player do? I don't know. If the receiver tells the player it has 7.1, it should be downmixing to 5.1, but who knows what it would actually do in that case.

It would be nice if all of this was clearly explained in the manual, but I doubt that it is.

Obviously, you hope that SOMEONE is taking care of business and doing something reasonable in the case of a 6.1/7.1 soundtrack. But I don't think there's any gaurantees here.

To date, I don't think 6.1 or 7.1 soundtracks are too common.

You could try contacting the manufacturer with this question. I would be interested in the response.

I'm pretty sure that 7.1 -> 5.1 is accomplished automatically by only playing the speakers you have. I also don't think I've ever seen a movie that only had 7.1 without 5.1 on another soundtrack.
The following Lionsgate titles that I own all only have a 6.1 or 7.1 PCM track without an accompanying 5.1 PCM track; they do all have Dolby 5.1 EX tracks but then I would lose lossless sound.

War PCM 7.1

3:10 to Yuma PCM 7.1

Crank PCM 6.1

Also, as for automatically playing 6.1 tracks on a 5.1 system this was the case with DTS-ES discrete and continues to be the case with 6.1 and 7.1 DTS-HD MA and Dolby TrueHD; the problem is dealing with PCM 6.1 and 7.1 tracks.

I figure somebody on this forum must have a 5.1 setup and BD with a PCM 6.1 or 7.1 track.

I still think you should contact Yamaha. If their answer is wrong, at least it will be definitively wrong

Back surrounds get re-routed to the side surround speakers

"The surround back channel signals are directed to the

surround left and right speakers when “SUR.B L/R SP” is

set to “NONE”"

*Looks like TrueHD Back Surround info doesnt get directed to the side surrounds in a 5.1 configuration.

However, since there are no TrueHD 7.1 titles , its moot

I dont know if its the same for DTS-HD MA 7.1 or not, and I have no way to test for this since my PS3

does all the decoding and sends out TrueHD and DTS-HD MA as LPCM.
