I have the RX-V1500 and keep the manual next to my couch. How you expect to get anything useful out of that great receiver without cracking the manual is beyond me. That said, I'll agree with you that with so many choices, it would be nice to have recommendations. I've been using THX (although my speakers are not THX certified, but they are nice) and it sounds great. I'll try something else soon, but it is a pain in the butt, I admit, as auditioning each mode can take a quarter of a movie or more to really get a true feel for it.

I've tried a few and some of them are kind of interesting sounding (not in a bad way). But I think I prefer just the regular Yamaha Enhanced Surround mode for most 5.1 material.


If you try them, go for the "Spectacle" DSP mode for watching big action or sci-fi movies, it seems to give a more expansive feeling to the soundtrack. Or the regular Cinema DSP mode for most other movies. I found the effect pretty convincing in making the soundtrack sound a bit more expansive and enveloping without going overboard.

I tried listening to thx, but everything seemed much quieter and to be honest I really do not see what the big deal is with thx? I was rather disappointed with thx. For a long time I have always wanted a thx receiver and now that i have one I don't even use its processing. No wonder there are so many thx receivers out now for so little money which is why i think thx is more of a name that sells, but i cant say the same for ultra because I have never listened to it, but from what i hear is that it is great.


Do you use thx processing with thx dvds only?

The cinema modes appear to have somewhat of an echo effect. A good example is the movie The Hunted where the two deer hunters are trying to kill the deer and Bennicio Del Torro starts hunting them and through out this scene he is talking to them through the surround speakers. Well, in contrast to standard and cinema modes, I can hear the voice clearly and feel as if he is right behind in standard as to where the cinema modes make his voice echo not matching his tone of voice with the center when he comes through the center.

I've tried all the DSP modes on my 2400 ... and while the enhanced and various cinema modes are nice, in the end I like the sound closer to what was intended.


I have a 7.1 setup, so normally I just run PLIIx Movie with all visual content. It sounds wonderful because it adds the 2 rear channels from even 5.1 sources. I switch to "auto" for DTS 6.1 discrete and occasionally EX encoded stuff to hear it as intended.


THX modes seems to water down the sound to me. I like the seal of approval for the specs regarding hardware quality control and amplifier strength/build however.
