Folks,

I am trying to set-up a inexpensive home theater before I build some built-ins and actually commit to more longer term equipment. I purchased a Yamaha RX-V365 for $199 at Best Buy and have it hooked up to a Toshiba DVD via HDMI and R & L audio cables, I have my Comcast Scientific Atlanta hooked to it via DVI-HDMI with R & L audio cables. I have my Toshiba 55" LED/LCD hooked up to the Yamaha via HDMI. I have Boston HS40 R and L, Boston HPS-10SE, and CS225 center channel. I go through the Yamaha set-up and set it up for 3.1 operation. All of the speakers produce their test tone. I save it, then go watch TV or DVD and only get the R and L speakers, not center or subwoofer? It has been 20 years since I was "into" audio (prior to video being big) and it has changed dramatically since then:) I have looked at the manual and on-line and don't have a lot of solid leads on where to go. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

You need to ditch those red & white RCA cables and use optical(Toslink) or coaxial digital. Your DVD player should have either and your STB probably only has optical That will get you 5.1 channel surround. Or in your case 3.1, since you won't have surround speakers selected. Right now you're limited to 2 channel(left and right). This is your best option.

The other option is to apply Dolby Prologic II or Dolby 3 Stereo processing. This will process your 2 channel stereo sources, the way you have it set up now, into 5 channel or 3 channel. Least desirable, but easiest option for you if the absolute best SQ isn't needed.
