looking at buying a yamaha rxv-665 a/v receiver to power my ht system consisting of paradigm mini-monitors (mains), paradigm cc190 (center), some paradigm in-wall cs50r (surrounds), and a paradigm 8" sub.

where am i going wrong.....for under 2 grand.

i'm kinda stuck on paradigm since my "high end" retailer only has klipsch as another option. the klipsch are more money and the bookshelf speakers don't sound as good to me....at this price point.

thanks for your ideas.

oh yeah, the retailer has other a/v receivers....a brand that starts with the letter " i ".....and i can't remember the name, as well as a marantz (sp??)...but they are going to run about 750 compared to the yamaha at about 550???

You get what you pay for! Given that, You'll get more with a brand like Onkyo.

I just returned an 863 Yamaha that I thought was the cats meow, because I came across a screaming deal on a Onkyo 705. To be very honest, I was a little shocked at the wide margin of quality between the two. The msrp of a 100 less on the Onkyo, lead me to believe the Yamaha would walk all over the Onkyo, this was not the case at all! The Onkyo sounds fuller, bigger, richer and more powerful. Even the Onkyo remote is of high quality.

Buy from a store that will take it back hassle free, or give them a CC # and borrow a unit. A day ago I was thinking all of the AVR's for $600~$900. were pretty much the same, I was wrong.

The Onkyo does run hotter than the Yamaha.

Could be a difference between YPAO and Audyssey.

Based on my own experiences, and some famous listening tests comparing amplifiers, I find it hard to believe the difference is in the amplifier section, or the pre amp section. Unless the 705 has more power, and you were going into clipping that is.

I should point out that there are many happy Yamaha owners, including me. So I have to contest a blanket statement condemning all Yamaha receivers.

That being said, I am glad you found a receiver to your liking.

Ignorance is bliss.

And it was not a blanket statement. Let's not forget I was a happy Yamaha owner a few days ago.

I was just helping the guy out with some good first hand advise.

What I know now is that the Yamaha of today is nothing like the Yamaha of yesterday, the Yamaha that made high quality midFi.

I'm guessing there top end AVR's are still good quality?
