I have the new Yamaha DVD S2300 universal player.

Overall, I love it.

But I am having a weird color problem that I can't seem to get to the bottom of, and I thought you all might have some thoughts.

In one particular movie I was watching, I noticed during several close-ups, the person's face was a pinkish color on top, and a bluish color on bottom. The two colors were split horizontally across the face. Seeing this, I assumed I had a loose component video connection. So I went back and made sure everything was tight (they're connected directly the monitor.) But I still had the same problem. Always in the exact same places in the movie.

I then connected the player to the monitor through the cheaper composite video out. This time, the picture was fine. So I narrowed it down to a component out problem.

So then I connected my other DVD player (a cheap Sony unit) to the TV, using the same component cables. Again, there was no problem. So I ruled out the cables as the source of the problem.

I took the player into the authorized Yamaha service center near me. After two weeks (today), they tell me (meanly) they can't replicate the problem. They don't see one.

The only other thing I was thinking was that maybe -- maybe -- the six RCA cables I have running out of the 6-channel audio outs were in some way interferring with the video signal. I am using Kimber Kable PBJs, which aren't insulated. I haven't tried connecting it to the player without the PBJs hooked up. So maybe that's it. But I kind of doubt it.

I also thought for a second that maybe the player's software is so refined and my Wega monitor is so good that it is just revealing source defects in the movie. That would kind of suck, though, for a $1000 player.

I haven't seen this problem on other movies. But I have noticed on several movies a subtle, strange color shift when the camera cuts from one angle to another. Only intermittently, though.

I can't return the player to my dealer, because it was a special order. I guess my next step is to call Yamaha. But when the service center called them, they had no record of anyone else having this problem. Of course, the player's brand new, so why would they?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Sorry for the long post.

Since my last post:

I got the S2300 home from the shop. I took it over to my friend's house and tried it on her TV, which is a Sony Wega similar to mine. I used her component cables.

It worked fine -- no color problem on the scenes I was having trouble with.

I went back home and tried it again on my Wega and again, I had the weird color problem. I have tried new cables...same problem.

I can only conclude now that it is my TV.

Could my TV's component video inputs be the problem?

Could there be some incompatibility between the Yamaha and the Sony?

Could I try some kind of contact cleaner or something?

Or do I need to call a repair person for the TV? (And how does one get service on a giant Sony set that I don't care to move?)

Thanks for any suggestions you can offer about this weird problem.

That's seems like an odd problem, but if it's really only noticable for one movie, it's probably just an isolated problem.

Is your TV still under warranty? I think WEGA TVs came with a "Sony at your service" policy where they would come out to your home if there was a problem within the first couple years.

I think I have gotten to the bottom of my problem.

Apparently, both the S2300 and my Wega TV are in perfect working order. But there may be a slight compatibility issue with my three-year-old analog Wega. I discovered this on another forum in which a man had a similar color banding problem with his Wega and a Panasonic DVD player. If I'm not mistaken, my Yamaha is based in part on a Panasonic platform.

Anyway, the fix involves going into the TV's service menu, and adjusting the "HOSC" level from 7 to 11. Here is a link that discusses how to make this change:

Since so many people read my posts, but so few answered, I wanted to be sure to explain what I think the problem is. And to let everyone know that (thankfully) the S2300 is NOT at fault.
