I just bought 14 gauge wire and hooked it up to the system, but every time I turn the volume up to a listenable level, the receiver shuts off. Is the wire too much for it to handle or something?

No, the wire gauge should have nothing to do with it shutting down. Recheck your wiring, make sure the wires are not reversed, - going to - and + going to +. If that doesn't help I would start over completly conneting 1 speaker at a time and then trying it in between each speaker connection. You might have a thin strand that you can't see that is shorting out somewhere.
