I have an open 12X12 living room connected to my dining room on the right and on the left is the stairway and entry to my house/living room. What I am wondering is if the calibration mic will be able to set up the soundwaves to make the surround effects work well with the size of the room and it being open to the entry and open to the dining room on the other side. If anyone can tell me if this unit will work good with these surroundings I would really appreciate it. Thank you!

Probably not. I have a Yamaha YSP and it works well only in Stereo mode. To bring any type of surround mode realistically you require a more or less rectangular room with walls for the soundbeams.
