Yearly Maintance question-Can I do this myself or buy the extended svc contract? HELP

721 Views 4 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  RichUF
I just bought me a Mits 48311 and did not (at least yet) buy the extended warranty/service contract. It seems like the only thing that the extended service contract offers is yearly maintance. How easy is it (or necessary) to clean the lenses and do the yearly checkup YOURSELF ?

My thoughts on the extended service contracts:

1. Like has been said many times, electronics that are defective usually break within the first few months. So these are covered by the manufactures warranty. Buy it on a MC/Visa or Amex and you get at least anther year covered.

2. Get a high-quality power surge protector (which includes CATV/SAT/DSS) input and if you get a surge, the protector should stop it at the unit. If not, those protectors cover connected equipment (some up to like a gazillion dollars).

3. You homeowners insurance also covers lightning and surges.

SO, I seem to be covering all the "benefits" of an extended service contract EXCEPT yearly maintance.

QUESTION ? Can a novice technofile become smart enough to do most of the yearly maintance on his Mits on his own ? Are there any good posts that outline what/when/how (or what NOT/when NOT/how NOT) to do your own maintenance.

Thanks in advance for all your expertise.

My thoughts.

Mastercard/Visa/Amex usually will not cover over $300 price cap the MFG warranty and extend it. This is a large myth that people like to believe.

I have been surfing sites like these everyday for years, never have I read or seen where it worked out like it is suggested. I would not bet on this aspect, because finding out will be too late.

Also, the MFG only covers defects, and not picture quality. basically they will only fix it if it breaks beacause it was built or assembled incorrectly, nothing more.

You get no maintaince from the MFG, it's defects only. Some MFG's don't even guarantee IN HOME SERVICE, means you pay extra or they hual the set out of your home.

Not really. What makes you say that? I've seen sets break only weeks after the MFG warranty expired. With RPTV's this is simply not true.

Great idea:) and worthwhile investment for sure.

With a $500 deductible or even more. The less deductible you pay, the more per month or per year you pay... In the end, you pay for it either way, and never make out this way. It's a lose/lose situation.

Perhaps, the top 5% on these boards can.

If your willing to devote enough time and effort you can do anything, but the effort required and the risks you take might not be worth it compared to spending the money.

Depending on your salary and the effort required to earn and pay for either the yearly maintainace (can be as much as 165$/hour in home) or the service plan, it might be better than the effort and task of having to do it yourself.

I did not buy and extended warranty on mine. I stuck with the 1 year that came with it, which is now expired.

My set still works great... and I have tweaked it to hell and back, so I feel I made the right choice.

but, the knowledge I had to obtain and effort I went through... I would not reccomend it unless you enjoy it as a hobby.

Greetings

If you pretty much need one repair visit after the warranty period, it will cost you a minimum of $200 ... regardless of the problem you have.

some see the extended warranty as simply insurance against the big failure ...

There you go ... insurance. You bet something will go wrong, maybe. They bet it won't.

I've had enough RPTV's now to know that these buggers do need repair work after the warranty period and it will cost ...

Yes,

For one visit, your all paid off.

Some techs can charge you $100 to ring the door bell and show up.

Sometimes I wish I bought the extended warranty on mine.

Cash was tight, but if I could do it over I think I would.

Though, I have not needed it yet so....who knows?

I guess I will know in a few more years if I made the right decision or not.

I bought one. It was way too expensive as far as insurance goes, but I sleep better at night.
