I am unable to determine the following: do the HLN models (specifically the HLN5065W, which I have all but decided to buy) support side-by-side PIP?

I have played around with the set quite a bit at Best Buy, and used PIP (even at Best Buy, the set looked great when I used the posted UM settings from Avia, and popped open the SM to fiddle with the gamma :) and found no sign of side-by-side.

I searched this forum and found several references, half by people saying, "No side-by-side, not even in the manual" and the other half by people saying they got it working, but not how.

So, does it do side-by-side at all? Maybe only on certain inputs/formats? Inquiring minds want to know, even if this really is not deal killer for me.

Thanks,

kazz

This question is similar, but not exactly the same: Does using different inputs change the answer to the side by side question? For example, can I have TV via component 2 on one side and Xbox via component 3 on the other? Or, to satisfy my video game dreams, PS2 on one side and Xbox on the other? ;-) Will it then scale the resolutions of the source material to fit the smaller window?

Any answers would be great. Good question kazza...

Can you tell me where on Samsung you found this? As of yesterday, they don't even mention the existence of the HLN models on the website...

That was on the HLM series. Samsung does not have very good info on the new HLN series but users have opened them up and say they have the same guts, meaning:

HLNanything = HLM507 features (tantus model)

So, I would GUESS that it does. Might have to contact a samsung rep.

The whole PIP thing is very confusing for the Samsungs.

On the HLN models (Tantus and non-tantus) and I believe on the HLM models as well this is how it works.

The picture in the PIP window can only be from a standard definition input (ie s-video, compisite). You can overlay a PIP on any source though. So you can have a picturce from standard cable on top of your PC screen.

The side by side only works if both sources are standard definition.

This is extremly limiting and in my opinion is almost false advertising, but such if life.

So all the models have side by side, but it only works with standard definition inputs.

Zakp,

When fiddling with the PIP features on Best Buy's HLN5066W floor model, I did manage to get the store's 1080i component feed into the PIP window, so it does not appear to be just StdDef for the window.

On the other hand, in another variation of the no discrete codes problem, it amazes me that I have to go through the UM to pick the PIP source, and I am almost flabbergasted that the remote has no button to swap the main display with the PIP window. I mean, cheapie tube TVs do that much.

The two main features I would want out of PIP are 1) channel swapping during commercials, so the PIP window can let me know when the commercials end; and 2) side-by-side with PC input for when I eventually get an HTPC up and running.

It is looking like the HLN will support neither of these uses for me. Like I said in my original post, this ain't a deal breaker for me, but it's a little disappointing that a ~$4k TV won't have these (seemingly) simple features. At least I can still watch two baseball games at once, as long as I really squint at one of 'em. :)

If you flip up the top part of the remote control you will see buttons for Locate, Size, and Swap. These buttons allow you to change the location of your PIP window, change the size of your PIP window (including side-by-side), and to swap the main display with the PIP.

Enjoy...

As I recall, it was on the projection screen faq. True, this may pertain to the HLM series.

One of the previous posters is correct ---

on Side-by-Side PIP, you cannot use anything other than Coaxial and Composite inputs.

For regular PIP, you can use any inputs you'd like.

Also SVideo. As long as its 480i (unless it is component) you are good. It was great during the war for US news with captioning on one side, and something else with sound on the other side.
