YLOD - Repair or Refurb?

1305 Views 7 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  TyrantII
I got a ylod on my 60GB and decided to try a 3rd party repair instead of trading it in for a refurbished unit from Sony. Knights Gaming Repair fixed the issue and I'll be getting my own system back with the HDD intact.

My reasoning is... I didn't have a recent backup and there's no sense throwing away a perfectly good HDD with all my data if that isn't where the problem is. It's out of warranty anyhow so there's no warranty to void. The repair is cheaper and faster. If the repair doesn't work, refurb would be my last option anyway, so try the repair. Also, I had a game disc in the unit that I couldn't eject and I wasn't sure I could get it back if I sent it to Sony. And, getting my own repaired unit back was more of a known outcome than getting a refurb (not sure what makes a refurb a refurb). Everything just added up to trying the repair route first.

How many of you YLODers out there decided to do likewise? What made you choose getting a refurb unit rather than getting your own unit repaired, or vice versa?

How much was it? And how quick was the turnaround?

I keep seeing more and more 60's dying. I'm afraid my time is limited with mine.
I have seen Ebay stores that do this repair, claim fast turn arounds and give you a short warranty.

Little information though, Sony Does give you your disc back. but they do give you a Refurb (which is someone elses repaired Ps3) that makes shipping times faster for us.

$79. See http://www.knightsgamingrepair.com/d.../services.html . They're also on eBay. They got my system Tuesday, fixed it on Friday, and shipped it back to me on the following Monday.
It's cool, but I'd be interested in what they're actually doing and fixing.

If they're just re-flowing the CPU/GPU, then it's a temporary fix at best, and they should say so or guarantee their work. My guess is they only fix PS3's with other issues (power supply, drive issues, ect).
I repaired mine! cost me like $35, heatgun + Artic silver thermal compound,...

And got it to work but,...I forgot that my usb ports weren't working before so I can't perform a back up. It is really easy to fix.

I really wouldn't like a refurb but maybe it is just me.

You could try getting repaired from a third party, at least you don't lose your saves, downloads,....and when you do, perform a back up. Most say that fixing the YLOD don't last much.

Check "More Info" on the site. They say so, and they guarantee their work.

One thing I liked about them is that if you call you talk to a person who actually knows what's going on with your system, and they call you right back if they miss your call. They call you when they're finished fixing it. It's nice to have that kind of customer service nowadays. God knows how long you'll be on the line trying to talk to Sony. Also, I work for a small company myself so I wanted to give them a chance.
Can't beat good customer service!

Middle management with their eye on a promotion they know they can get because of the easiness of cost cutting out labor has been the worst aspect of buissiness in the last 30 years.
