All great picks, and I'll add

The Big Red One

Great Escape (probably my favorite)

Patton

and

Kelly's Heros (hey, it's OK to lighten up once in a while!!)

I guess I'm more of a WWII film guy than a Vietnam film guy.

I second "Saving Pvt. Ryan" as the best, followed by "We Were Soldiers" and "Apocalypse Now". Best War Movie line: I love the smell of napalm in the morning.. anybody else have classic war lines?

Lots of great suggestions here. Two of my favorites not yet listed here are:

No Man's Land (dir. Danis Tanovic) - put this one on your netflix queue, you won't regret it.

The Thin Red Line (dir. Terence Malick) - 'nuff said.

Mark,

I was getting nervous not finding The Thin Red Line in anyone's list before I went all the way to the bottom of the page and found your posting. I agree that Saving Private Ryan is a good movie, which I believe came out in the same year as The Thin Red Line. However, I would put The Thin Red Line as a better war movie simply because of its true potrayal of human beings in a war. Ryan has a great story, but it's not something that will make you think differently about a war... Red Line does make you see war differently, IMHO...

I also second Das Boot... And if I may add one more, Tora Tora Tora... I'm a Korean, and you all know what kind of relationship we have with Japan... But, I have to admit that Tora is a great war movie. If it can move a Korean, it's got to be special...

When I saw this topic, I decided on the spot to come up with a top ten...I ended up with eleven. After compiling the list, I read the previous postings before adding this post to the thread---seems like my favorites are mostly "the usual suspects" (exceptions might be A BRIDGE TOO FAR, THE ENEMY BELOW, PORK CHOP HILL).

ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT (1930)

BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001)

THE BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI (1957)

A BRIDGE TOO FAR (1977)

THE ENEMY BELOW (1957)

THE GREAT ESCAPE (1963)

PATTON (1970)

PORK CHOP HILL (1959)

SAVING PRIVATE RYAN (1998)

THE THIN RED LINE (1998)

TORA! TORA! TORA! (1970)

If that Omaha Beach invasion doesn't make you think differently about war, nothing will.

How about Cross of Iron with James Coburn. Sam Peckinpah's only war movie.Would someone please release this in r1.The hen's tooth release is an abomination and I don't have a multi-region player.
