Personally, I had considered the newer model KF42WE655 (with built-in ATSC tuner) over plasma but I still cannot get pass the viewing angle problem with RPTV. I think the smaller the RPTV you would have more problem with the viewing angle.

picked one up at Costco the other day

random thoughts are:

so far very nice I am using a older pany dvd player and have my denon 2900 on the way and played with the UMR tweaks and very happy with it :)

HD channels are killer to watch

I prefer it over the plasmas, I almost got the pany 42 plasma but the pros cons of each unit made me lean toward the Sony

yes there are some viewing angles but nothing that gets to me when I am sitting watching a movie

if you are walking all over the house watching TV then the plasmas are the way to go but I like sitting down and watching movies :)

one of my buds 3 year old Plasma doesnt have such a nice pic now ;) seems a lot darker fuzzier ??? and he payed like $8k back then for it

I figure I can spend $5000 or so now on a tv OR spend under $2500 now and in 3 years see what is out there for another $2500 or so my feelings are what you pay $2500 for in 3 years will blow away the $5000 sets now so that was part of my reasoning to get the Sony

not sure if there are any specifics I can answer ?? but if so let me know I can try to answer

my thoughts are go for it bang for buck you cant go wrong and again there are always pros and cons to every device out there I just think for the money the sony lcds have the best balance for the $$$

depending on price I might also consider the brand new ones over this model if I was on the mainland I think I might have gotten the new model but out here on Maui things are tougher to get and limited selection

also Costco I don't have to worry if I don't like it

hope this helps

I have the KF50WE610. Essentially the same except it is 50" rather than 42".

I have been very happy with my set. I have had it nearly 1 year. Had the original bulb replaced with the OSRAM bulb and haven't had any trouble with the new bulb.

Side viewing angles for me are not a problem. With the way my room is laid out, getting too far over to the sides is not a problem whatsoever. Picture quality looks fine at the extremes of my room.

My standard definition cable tv doesn't look so good, but that was expected. My DVD's look very nice and my HDTV feed is outstanding, so I know that all picture problems with standard def cable are with my provider and my cable box (provided by Comcast).

Only downsides for me are

bulb is $200 to replace

Since this uses a projector style bulb, I don't turn on this TV unless I plan to leave it on for 2 hours plus. Therefore, I don't use the TV as much as I would have a standard tube TV. But I love the size and it makes my movies enjoyable so I can live with that.

Other than that, perfectly happy with the set. It did everything that I had purchased it for.

Hi,

picked one up at [MSRP ONLY! http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...readid=300703+ ]

tax + 4 year agreement

Awesome HD picture

Execellent DVD picture , with quality DVD's

SD and Analog good picture.

has very good sound on board, of course your HT will be the way to go but the sound is better than most I have listen too.

This is out of the box adjustments.

Being new to the LCD RPTV I have not tried some the adjustments that some the more experienced guys have done, need to study and ask more questions before I venture there.. :D

but they say they make it even better with some tweeking.

The Pro memory stick works awesome as well.

I considered the new model but after some research about the Cable cards,

which there were many good points but some bad points as well. One being that several people had stated in articles that in approx 2 years when the next generation Cabls card comes out it would not be compatiable with today bought TV's with the new cc slot. They do say that it i s better picture, however it is a technology in its beginning and perhaps all is not as simple as it seems, have heard some people having problems with thier sets working with ccards.

Like I say I am a newbie in this arena and just passing along my thoughts.

I think you would be very happy with it, and most likely get a great deal such as I did on one since they are being closed out.

Please explain "OGRAM" Blub? Is that a Sony replacement bulb or an after market bulb? What kind of bulbs are the "new" Sony models using & how long will they last? I am completely new to LCD's & DLP's so I hope I'm not sounding too dumb :D I also posted this over at HTF because a friend is looking at this set & he can get Panasonic, Sony or Toshiba sets at cost but doesn't want to go over $2,500 retail & he saw the Sony but what other models should he take a look at or would you stick with an LCD & Sony? but he needs a set that's not very deep.

Sony has had some issues with lamps in these units. Search for GWIII Buzz. The original lamps were Phillips and many got Osram replacements. Mine died very late and I received another Phillips. They also replaced the lamp driver. (a circuit board) These sets seem to excel at Standard Definition content and that's important because there isn't enough High Def. on yet. To solve my SD cable box issue I split the cable and only use the box for digital channels and HD. The viewing angle thing is vertical not horizontal. You can sit way to the side and not get any distortion. How ever it must be mounted low like 16- 22" off the floor max. If you don't need a built-in HD tuner or cable card, these sets are on close out for $400. to $1000 less than most of us paid.
