Hey folks. This thread is for all the new Samsung 54/64 series 720p Plasma displays. Its main function is for user menu settings and tweaks to get the most out of your set.

I myself currently have at my disposal a SyderTVPro colorimeter,a set of RGB color filters, a copy of DVD in HD-DVD and DVD, have on the way a DVD copy of Getgrey and may also be upgrading my current colrimeter to something a bit more accurate as I have been having some annoying issues with it lately. I am also probably going to be picking up a service menu within the next week as well. Well see how that goes.

Anyway, Ill start off the thread with some settings of mine. So far I have calibrated the PC input and component video input and am in the process of tweaking HDMI right now. I will also post some settings of S-video or composite video input if someone asks for it. Otherwise I probably won't waste my time as I don't use them.

Any questions on how to improve performance or troubleshoot, this is probably the best place. Please keep the threads on THIS subject. And the banter/off topic posts for the "other" Samsung threads.

The settings below are in a light controlled room in a "dark" setting. Energy saver on the plasma is set to HIGH. If your in a bright room always use the Energy Saver option to adjust picture output FIRST. If that doesnt make the picture bright enough during the day, then move up contrast a few notches. The less the better though remember.

Component video really allows for accurate colors including the green primary. Able to get a much better balance due to the G/R tint control over the PC input. On the otherhand. The PC input allows for 1:1 pixel mapping and 0 overscan. Component shows about 2 percent overscan for those who must know. Not sure currently if the overscan can be shut off. Ill know when the service menu comes.

Zippy,

Thanks for starting the thread. I don't even own the 5054 yet, but yet I was looking forward to the settings. I know others have as well. I'll have more input when my tv actually arrives.

Hey Zippy,

Great idea on this thread. There are too many now. This one will simplify things alot. I know everybody is coming to you for alot of questions. Sorry to badger you, but you seem to have the best handle on things.

My question on the technical side is.... Is there a SM setting that you have found to enable the HDMI Black Level control to be on at all times? I have tried everything I could think of and have yet to see it enabled. Mine has been greyed out to normal from day one.

Thanks

Yes, it has both an "Auto detect and adjust" mode and can also be done manually, also have both course and fine freq. adjustments as well to reduce ambient noise("red sparkles") from the picture.

Zippy, are you referring to the DN Noise Reduction, I think they call it?

Why high energy saver and high contrast? What exactly does the energy saver trigger?

And you said you are using the SpyderTv. So are your settings for all inputs set to D65?

Yep, its all at D65. Contrast isnt set very high. Its set to an acceptable level to the eyes to deliver good dynamic range while still producing accurate colors and greyscale mapping without straining the eyesight. Energy saver set to "high" for evening viewing. If your watching during the daytime or in a bright room turn it to "OFF". The Energy saver mode on this plasma acts in the same way as a backlight for an LCD display. It adjusts the overall output of the display to better match the room lighting.

So what contrast can you effectively achieve with your settings? I guess it's not 15.000:1

And if the energy saver basically turns down the maximum brigthness it also reduces the maximum contrast, does it not?

Have you experimented between no energy saving and lesser contrast and energy saver and higher contrast?

Yes the energy saver feature increases the entire pictures output, black and white level.

15,000:1 is a dynamic on/off rating. Your eyes would be in tears if you watched something with that spread.

Real world ANSI viewing will put the set around 1000-1500:1 or even lower depending on viewing. The set is capable of much more than that, but the discomfort to the eyes would be unbearable.

So do you own one of these sets or are you just here to debate things? This is a settings thread for folks who have this set and want help getting it dialed in.

I use energy saver on "High" at night and turn it "off" during the day when there is more ambient light.

I apologize, I am just looking for the best settings and am trying to find out which are both the closest to D65, consume the least power but at the same time do not compromise the contrast. Hence my questions. I just wanted to know whether these are the best settings on all accounts or whether you have to severly compromise one thing in order to get the other.

And no, I do not own one YET. I will be getting one very soon but they, as I said, have only just become available over here and are not in shops yet. Almost only internet stores. So I am waiting for my dealer to finally get them in, which shoudl hopefully be sometime in May.

But it's the one I want and will be buying soon, so in addition to already having ordered my wall mount, I am now hunting for all the infos on settings I can get my hands on.

P.S.: IRE on your HDMI source is set to 7.5?
