What is the most inexpensive DLP projector that will allow the zoom method? Are there any?? Basically, I am unhappy with my Sanyo Z60 and I am pretty sure it is the fact that it is LCD. I had this same problem with my first projector (Sanyo Z1) that I quickly switched out for an Infocus 4805. When I would watch movies with the Z1, I would get eye strain. With the 4805, the strain would go away. It didn't seem to matter what the brightness and contrast settings were. At all light levels, the Z1 bothered me while the 4805 did not. Now fast forward, and I purchsed a Z60 that is giving me similar problems. I went with the Z60 because it was inexpensive and allowed me to do the zoom method. Now I am wondering if there are any modest priced DLP's that are good for zooming. My gut tells me there aren't, but I wanted to see if I am missing anything. thanks.

I found the zoom range and smaller available lens shift on many DLPs to be an issue when investigating projectors for my zoom-method set up. The JVC RS20 fit the bill with a generous zoom range and lens shift (remote controlled).

Depends what is inexpensive.

I have a BenQ W9000, it can do the zoom method comfortably with motorized zoom, focus and lens-shift. You should be able to get a used one quite cheap.

However, it requires that you do a modification to extend its zoom range. I have done it and it's not that difficult. You have to open it up and remove a plastic stopper that is screwed to one of the kogwheels. The tricky thing is to get it open, took me more than an hour. Also, make sure you have a good set of screwdrivers and real small ones.

There is a tread about the mod here on AVS if you do a search.

Virtually any projector technology can do the zoom method...it is just a matter of finding one with a lens zoom range that can accommodate your throw and the necessary zoom. Being DLP is irrelevant.

Being DLP only mattered because as far as I know, all of the inexpensive ones don't have enough zoom and/or lens shift to do the zoom method.

Thanks, I will research this.

As far as what is reasonble pricewise... I would say anything under 2000.00.

I found the answer... I bought a Samsung SP-H700AE that a shop had leftover. It was still NIB when I got it. So far I am happy except for a problem with my OPPO player that is giving me a noisy picture with lots of jaggies. I am in contact with OPPO, so we will see what happens. So for me the only acceptable route for DLP with CIH was to go with an older top of the line projector.
