Movie ticket seller Fandango has made a major move in the on-demand streaming service wars by announcing its intent to buy Vudu.com from Walmart. Comcast-owned Fandango purchased Vudu from Walmart for an undisclosed sum. This gives Comcast a formidable new tool to appeal to cord cutters and expand its portfolio of online offerings.
According to an article in The Verge, Fandango will use its acquisition of Vudu To increase the scale of its own digital on-demand offering, FandangoNOW. The goal is to compete with Amazon and iTunes, not Netflix.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic, commercial movie theaters remain closed and even when they reopen it is unknown how enthusiastic moviegoers will be about returning to enclosed public spaces. In this environment, it is only logical that the move to on-demand delivery of movies, including new releases, is accelerated in some fundamental way. This acquisition achieves that.
