Now that UHD Blu-ray titles have been in the market for about a year, it’s great to see more companies offering players. New at CES 2017 is the LG UP970, which will support HDR10 at launch and Dolby Vision after a firmware update in March—though there are currently no discs with content encoded in that format. It also provides two HDMI outputs—one is HDMI 2.0a for 4K/HDR video and the other is HDMI 1.4 that sends audio only to a legacy sound system that can’t pass 4K/HDR10 video on to the display.
The UP970 provides an Ethernet port and Wi-Fi to stream 4K/UHD content from Netflix and YouTube; it might offer other streaming apps, but that was not disclosed at the press conference. In fact, I have no other information about the player at this time, but I hope to learn more during the show, so stay tuned!
