“Teen Pregnancy. It’s a Monster”

Synopsis:

“After status-obsessed teen Sara has sex for the first time, she wakes up the next day nine months pregnant-with an alien.” – Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

My Take:

Senior year is going to rule! Thanks to her relationship with clueless hunk Skyler, Sara is totally in with the cool girls. But Skyler contracted an extraterrestrial bug during his summer vacation. After just one night together, Sara discovers she’s nine months pregnant (!). Desperate to keep her condition on the DL, she turns to the only person she can trust: her nerdy ex-bestie, Hayley. The girls soon realize this alien problem is only just the beginning. Aliens had best beware in this hilarious comedy filled with action and tongue-in-cheek teen spirit.

Snatchers wasn’t at all what I was expecting when it arrived on my doorstep for review. I hadn’t heard of it and judging a book by its cover left me rolling my eyes and totally prepared for a bland, boring, waist high deep pile of drivel. Well, I was pleasantly surprised. Co-written by directors Stephen Cedars and Benji Kleiman Snatchers is a throwback to the wonderfully cheesy 1980s B-horror teen movies that my friends and I couldn’t get enough of back in the day.

Filled with tongue and cheek humor, purposefully eyebrow raising practical effects, spot on levels of gore and a thoughtful narrative approach that hits its intended target at nearly every turn. The casts high energy adds to the fun, especially Mary Nepi and Gabrielle Elyse whose chemistry fuels the film’s percolating essence. Snatchers isn’t going to be every genre fan’s cup of tea. However, for those that appreciate what inspired it and the cleverly infused homage/contemporary blend at its heart, it’s a fun and entertaining ride from pretty much beginning to end. Check your brain at the door and have fun!

Snatchers comes to Blu-ray Disc from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment featuring 1080p AVC encoded video and lossless DTS-HD 5.1 Master audio sound.

This is an excellent video presentation that seems a perfect match for the source material. Colors are deeply saturated with eye pleasing vitality and delineated depth. Images are resolute, with stable sharpness, crisp detail and appreciable subtle refinement. Certain scenes appear better resolved than others although I suspect this is related to the photography. Contrast is dynamic without being overpowering and blacks are respectable in depth with discernible detail visible in low lighting and shadows. I didn’t see any signs of video related artifacts and thought that in general video quality was excellent.

This DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio sound track is cracking good and delivers crystal clear sound that is rich in sonic detail and effortless dynamics. Excellent tonal balance makes pans across the left, center and right channels appear seamless. Bass reproduction is appropriate and, the mix makes effective use of the surrounds to reproduce the discrete and ambient sounds contained within the soundtrack. I enjoyed the audio presentation as a whole and found it complimented the film’s thematic tone.

Bonus Features:

  • The Birth of Snatchers
  • Unexpected: The Snatchers Blooper Reel
  • Filmmaker Audio Commentary
  • DVD
  • Digital Code

Final Thoughts:

Snatchers is pitch perfect entertainment that harkens back to the cheesy but, fun, teen-horror comedies of my youth. It comes to Blu-ray from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment featuring solid high definition audio/video and a fair supplemental package. Snatchers isn’t going to find appeal with the masses but, its good old-fashioned check your brain at the door fuel for those with an appetite for a midnight comedy with come chops.
