Backlight on RCA universal remote

I recently purchased the RCA RCRN06GR 6-device remote and it is VERY good. One feature I really liked was the backlight, which is controlled manually by pressing the light bulb button at the bottom of the remote. However, it only lights up about half of the buttons. Judging from the buttons that do light up, I'm assuming it is working properly. The remote was only $15, so any kind of lighting on it is a bonus to me. But, I was hoping someone else might possibly have that remote and could tell me if the backlight is working properly. There are also similar RCA remotes with a backlight as well, but they control four and eight devices. If someone had one of those remotes instead, that would be fine since the backlight is most likely the same. Here is a picture of the one I have:

I also bought this last week, and yes, it does Not totally light up, but, the ones that do illuminate the ones that don't. [ not a dealbraker for me]

I agree, for 15$, it's pretty decent.

I did not see the RCA that controlled 8 devices, Is it the same remote? What store did you see the 8 device in?

Thanks for letting me know! I was afraid I might have to take it back if the backlight wasn't working properly. I've never had one with a backlight before, so I am still happy with it nonetheless. I didn't see the 8 device remote at Kmart, but I did see it online somewhere. I believe it was on RCA's website.

I agree that the remote is DEFINITELY worth $15. One of the main things I love about it is the learning feature. I was able to use another (older) universal remote to program a bunch of hidden functions for my Zinwell DTV converter box into the remote!

I haven't tried that yet, I read the directions for individual button programming and it looks like I need 3 hands! lol

Do you have a simpler way to program off another remote?

BTW, I went back and bought 2 more, one for back up, and 1 for the bedroom.

I like the layout of this better than 95% of everything else I looked at

I unfortunately don't have a simpler way to program the learning functions, but it's not that hard once you get used to it. Here are the steps:

1. On the RCA remote, press and hold the device key you want to program the learning function for (TV, DVD, etc.).

2. While you still have the device button pushed down, use your other hand to press and hold the Record button on the RCA remote. After a second or two, the light on the red Power button will stay on.

3. On the RCA remote, press and release the button you want to use for the new function.

4. Get the remote that has the button you want to program into the RCA remote. Then, point both remotes directly in front of each other so the RCA remote can receive the signal from the other remote. I try to lay them both on a flat surface if possible.

5. On the other remote, press and hold the button you want the RCA remote to learn. Then, the Power button on the RCA remote should blink once, which will tell you that the button was programmed successfully. If it doesn't blink, wait approximately one minute for the Power button to start blinking. Then, press either Sleep or the backlight button and the light should go off. After that, try step 5 again.

6. Try the newly programmed button and make sure it works properly. Sometimes, it won't store the new function correctly and the Power button will stay lit up for about one second when you press the button you programmed. If this happens, repeat step 5, which you may have to do twice before it programs correctly.

The manual states that having the RCA remote too close to certain light sources could prevent it from programming the learning functions properly, but I haven't had much trouble with it. If you have any trouble, let me know!

U have the exact model & I was surprised to see some buttons don't light up. The 3, 6, 7,Fast Forward, Pause, Skip Back, TV, Audio, Enter & All the small ones between the Central pad & the number pad.

I returned it to the store & the manager agreed it didn't look right & opened another one. Same thing! So he tried another...the same!!

I kept the original as some lights are better than none. I called RCA technical help & was told...that's how it's designed!!??? WTF!!!???? Who the hell designs a BACKLIT remote that only lights up some buttons??

I noticed there was a Date Code on the package of 3039CX & was hoping that maybe there was a bad batch? But after what I read here, I guess not.

This is Too bad, as the remote is great, especially for under $20. If all the lights worked why would I need a $100 Harmony when this unit has ALL the necessary buttons & functions to run my Blu Ray, Amplifyer, TV & Motorola PVR?

My brand new remote lights only the power button and only as Im pressing it. This is false advertising. It prides itself on having backlit keys. NOT a power button that only lights up when you push it. The very feature I was looking for is a remote I can use in low lighting situations like I dont know maybe when you want to watch TV and dim the lights. Another crappy made in America product for me to return. Where is the pride in making quality products? RCA you were one of the pioneers of TV and I wanted to support you now I gotta return this and support one of your competitors.
