Just ordered the Samsung 55" LED UN55B8000, but it was damaged & not delivered..

I see they now have the 8500 series..

Can someone explain the differences between the two series & if the $600+ difference is worth it..

Thanks!

Biggest difference is that the 8500 is Full backlit LED with local dimming. The 8000 uses edge lit LED's and does not have local dimming. Big diference. As for whether the price difference is worth it. If you're only talking $600 I think it is worth it...more of a personal decision depending on if you can afford it.

The 8000 I ordered was damaged in delivery yesterday...

Not sure if I should change to the 8500..

Not available thru my source until Dec, so to get it online or thru a store would have to pay retail $4200 if I want it now.

Got the 8000 for $2100...

Guess I'll have them bring in another 8000..

The 8500 is not thin like the 8000 because of the backlighting.

Uhh, not exactly correct. 1.2" for the 8000 vs. 1.6" for the 8500. The 8500 is definately what i'd call thin. 1/4" difference..

I know the difference between the technologies in these two sets, but from a practical perspective I'm not sure the price premium is worth it to go from edge lit LED to back lit LED. The difference in street price appears to be about a 50% premium to step up from the 8000 to the 8500.

I did the best that I could to evaluate the two sets, nearly side-by-side viewing Blu-ray HDMI in well lit store watching parts of the Dark Knight. Was hard for me to see substantial difference under these conditions. And, of course, neither set was calibrated.

I'd especially be interested to hear from anyone who has calibrated both of these sets.

I know that theoretically the back lit should be better, but in practice? A 50% increase in price is a lot.
