Does Any Scaler Do Well With DSS?

Anyone **happy** with their scaler's performance with DSS?

I know a lot of people are unhappy with the quality of DSS signals in general. However, here I'm looking for scaler owners who think their scalers make that DSS signal look darn acceptable.

Yes.

I bought one of the close-out NEC 4000Q's from AV Science. With the signal quadrupling and a subtle tweaking of the sharpness and detail settings, DSS looks quite good. Last night's The Sopranos was excellent.

But wait, there's more! I was watching on my TiVo, not recorded at the highest quality setting. And here's something that is amazing me. Those who have PVR's know that in certain kinds of scenes you can easily see the square MPG compression artifacts: dissolves, fire, explosions, etc.

Since using the 4000Q on my FPTV, I haven't seen ANY of those artifacts. I can only assume that the NEC is comparing multiple frames and correcting the problem. Frankly, I couldn't believe my eyes when I first noticed this.

I'm slowly finding the ways to set the many adjustments to max out the image quality with my FPTV. For instance, tonight I discovered you need to set motion compensation to the minimum value, otherwise you get judder.

Still tweaking...

Arrow, the Quadscan Elite is doing a great job for me. I suppose that makes sense since everyone is telling me it has the same Genesis chip as the LP350, which was also great as a deinterlacer/scaler.

My current idea of the best value:

Boxlight 38t

Quadscan Elite

Panasonic RP91

RCA DTC-100

Da-Lite 100" 4:3 1.3gain

Studio Experience SE616's

and some other stuff.

I currently have an IScan Pro also...but it only improves on a good signal coming in.....the concept of "Garbage In / Garbage Out" definitely applies here.

I did a little survey on the "channels" on DirectTV (at least the ones I get)...here is what I found...

Channels 100-199 - Great quality. the IScan kicks ass on these channels.

Channels 200-400 - HORRIBLE MPEG2 compression. On one episode of "Married with Children", Al has a square head!! http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/smile.gif It seems that Direct TV doesn't care about the "packaged" channels. I can't blame my IScan for the crap that comes out of it during the viewing of these channels.

Channels 500-590 - Fair performance. The IScan helps here.

My IScan does help dramatically during my Laserdisc viewings...so it is staying where it is. http://www.avsforum.com/ubb/wink.gif

Mando,

Right, can't expect it to work miracles.

I'm curious if you've observed the same thing I did, on some channels (I think it was both Dish and regular TV) but not all, the color had a greenish tinge. It was hard to correct with the super touchy pot, it was just ever so slightly off the center detent, plus then the other stations would be too red.

Thanks

I have owned/tried the following:

1. Internal electronics on my projector;

2. iScan Pro;

3. Quadscan Pro;

4. ATI AIW & TV Wonder;

5. Happauge WinTV-HD;

6. HiPix DTV-200;

7. dScaler; and

8. Faroudja NR.

Faroudja NR is clear winner for DSS, with HiPix a strong second and dScaler (when I can get it to work) a respectable third.

Noah, I don't have the "greenish" tinge you are describing. My colors come over fine. In fact, I don't even mess with the tiny knobs of the IScan Pro. I do all my adjustments via memory settings on my 10HT.

Hope this helps.

Thx
