HBO Max Not Transmitting Atmos

Hey all,

I got the free HBO Max account for being an AT&T subscriber. I wanted to check out some of the movies that has 4k, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos. I have a Fire Stick 4k and a LG OLED set. Apparently my version of the LG is too old to stream Dolby Vision and Atmos. But according to HBO's site and others the Amazon Firestick should be able to do Vision and Atmos. The vision is working, but Atmos only comes in DD+. Is there a setting or something else that needs to be done?

Thanks for any advice or insight you can provide. Cheers!

You should have Atmos thru your processor, I get Atmos on HBO MAX on mine. Are you getting the ATMOS logo on your processor display?

No it doesn't display Atmos. I have my gear in my signature, but I have the Firestick 4k plugged directly into the receiver so the audio isn't being sent via e-Arc. Amazon movies are 4k Atmos streamed that way, and even if it was eARC, Disney+ will send Dolby Atmos audio through the return channel.

So it only doesn't work with HBO Max for me. Just trying to figure what setting or something that I need to make.

HBO Max app is very fragile. It constantly broke from time to time in various platform, or even on specific device. For example, it is currently not delivering any Dolby Vision on Chromecast with Google TV (but other Google TV or Andorid TV devices are ok). So, you have to compare the exact same device, not other device in general.

So your suggestion is to plug the device into the TV directly and see if that "fixes" the issue?

According to this The Ultimate Dolby Atmos Guide | Nakamichi USA | True Surround Soundbar with Dolby Atmos & DTS:X, the Firestick 4k only supports ATMOS on certain platforms. No idea why it that would be a thing though...
You probably meant to say "...HBOMax only supports Atmos on certain platforms.." or maybe "..the Fire TV Stick 4K only support Atmos on certain services..." (Fire TV OS and Roku OS and Android TV OS are the platforms, whereas NetFlix and HBOMax et al are the services)

Regardless, that "Guide" is very outdated and incorrect as for HBO Max it doesnt list any Fire TV model as supporting DV/DA, and only one Roku model with Atmos support (in actuality any DV-enabled model supports DV/DA, and the other HDR models support HDR10/DA, and DA with every other model), and has the GCCWGTV lacking DA support (it has DV/DA support).

While it is perhaps a useful source of general Atmos info, its mostly useless as a source of detailed accurate information about specific app/service/platform/model DV/DA support.

@bobby94928 Are you still getting Dolby Atmos on Max app on an Apple TV 4k? I have the most recent version of the Apple TV 4k and the most recent software update on the Max app and the Max Ultimate Plan (i.e., Dolby Vision/Atmos enabled) but still cannot get Atmos on Max on ATV 4k. All other apps play Atmos perfectly on the ATV 4k including Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple TV+, and Paramount+. Dune 4k purchased from the Apple movies store plays Atmos perfectly. It’s the Max app nothing else.

Thanks. I realize this is an old thread but it’s the exact problem I have.

I just retested with Game of Thrones and Atmos played fine. Then I went to Iron Claw and Atmos was silent. I did two left clicks (rewind) and sound came in. I have read that this is a Max app issue with the latest Apple update. Once you have done the workaround it will continue to work for that program even after you leave and come back days later. I’m sure they will fix it eventually.

Is getting Atmos on MAX the only issue you have? I haven't checked on my system in a while but I can check for you to see if it working.

#20 ·
yes, it’s the only issue. In fact the main content goes totally silent when Atmos content is played. For example, Max frequently runs a trailer for one of their new upcoming series at the start of a movie with Atmos content. That trailer runs in PCM Surround or Stereo and plays fine. Then the main content such as Dune 4k starts and dead silence. Fast forward into the movie and still dead silent.

Max Dolby Vision content plays in DV just fine. Movies and series NOT in Atmos also have sound in their correctly offered format, surround or stereo. Movies and series which offer Dolby Atmos have no sound.

I checked MAX on my system and there is definitely a problem. Shows like DUNE are supposed to be in Atmos but they are only only playing in 5.1. So MAX needs to fix it's app, it's their problem. Your system is OK..

Yes, there is a problem My Roku is saying it's in Atmos but there is barely any sound info in the upper channels this is a pic from Mad Max it definitely sounds like 5.1 only. I've tried MAX on Apple TV & the PS5 too all have the same issue.

Ok, Thanks! 👍

I will have to experiment with this, they should figure this out soon & update the app, people are paying for this stuff and it always boggles the mind that they can't get it working properly. They have had years to figure this stuff out.

If your Roku Ultra is a 4800/4802 then you need to make sure its in passthrough mode: Settings/Audio/Digital audio format = Passthrough

Otherwise in Auto mode the 4800/4802 will transcode/convert all (non-DTS) output to the highest detected (via EDID) Dolby level of the connected device, which for most modern AVRs is DMAT/Atmos (Dolby PCM MAT 2.x/Atmos) and may present with unwanted audio anomalies/artifacts/quality/latency/channel relocation issues.

The Max app on RokuOS, AndroidTV OS, FireTVOS, and WebOS is Atmos-enabled for Atmos encoded content, though some Atmos mixes may be thin, otherwise specific platform app playback bugs may cause occasional glitches.

Finally, make sure you are logged into the Max app with an account with an Ultimate Ad-Free subscription level, otherwise you wont get 4K/HDR/Atmos playback.

@khaberst I read on a thread in AVS forum about a bug. A workaround is to hit the rewind arrow on the ATV remote while the movie is playing. You only need to back a couple seconds. Then ATMOS comes in. It works for me. After you do this once the same movie will always be available in ATMOS.

Be aware of a couple of other issues with ATMOS and the Apple TV 4K:
  • if the ATV is low on memory it may drop down to a less memory intensive format, e.g., not ATMOS. Back out correctly of all services open on the ATV. Only have HBO Max open and running.
  • if nothing solves the problem, back out of all services, go to “System” on the ATV and restart it. If problem remains, skeep the ATV and unplug its power cable for 60 seconds then repower it and try again.

Some of these may work on the ROKU as well. I’m not using a Roku.

FINALLY, be aware that AT&T or DirecTV may not allow 4K/ATMOS when using their log-in credentials to access MAX online. I needed to cancel my DirecTV HBO MAX device, only HBO not everything, and resubscribe online to HBO MAX to get 4K/ATMOS.
DOUBLE FINALLY, be aware that HBO Max online subscription is available both in high definition and in 4K/ATMOS. The 4K/ATMOS costs more. It’s worth it!

I may be an idiot. Someone pointed out to me that there is a Ultimate Subscription level you need for ATMOS. I had the Ad-Free subscription I guess. Thought I had the highest level and never had an issue I can remember with ATMOS before. It's been several months since I watched a movie on MAX, anyone know when this changed?
