How much space behind screen wall?

I am about to build my screen wall and am looking for some help on how much space I should leave behind it. Behind the wall I will be putting a pair of axiom m60's that have a depth of 15" and a hsu vtf3 mk2 that is 22" deep but has a width of 15" if i put it sideways.

My thought was to leave about 19" behind and put the sub sideways, but am looking for opinions.

I will be using an AT screen and the above will put my viewing distances approx 12 and 18 feet.

Thanks in advance.

just my opinion, but why not just put the screen wall 2 feet out? You will have room for all your speakers and no have to worry about them being right up against the screen. my fronts are 17 in deep and my screen is 2 feet from the wall, i have 7 in between the speakers and the screen.

One issue that you should consider is that AT screen manfacturers specify a minimum distance between the screen and speaker. In the case of Stewart microperf, it's something like 10".

So you may want to put that into the considerations for the amount of room behind the screen.

Mine is 24" leaves enough room for the speakers to breath. my speaker faces are less than 3" from my SMX screen and that works great, be sure your entire wall behind everything including floor and ceiling are treated though.

With the 24" depth I have room for my SUB to face forward, which since it is remote controlled is good. it is behind stetched black velvet but the signals get through just fine.

My viewing distances are just over 9" and about 12.5

Like anything in home theater planning and construction there are compromises and decisions. If you have the room length to work with I'd suggest even three feet since then you can access the speakers by just walking around back there. The bad news is you will lose space for seating etc if that is at a premium.

Two feet is a nice number in that many speaker manufacturers are now taking this into consideration. Even the Danley DTS 20 has a dimension allowing it to fit into that space. I have just under two feet from the front wall to the back of the screen. This leaves the width of the 2x4 screen wall eating up a few inches so really have just under 20" for speakers. This is tight but has been adequate.

If you don't have spave 2' would be the low end for having the ability to upgrade etc IMO. If you have the room length I'd go with 3'.

Mike,

I was constrained by a door, so I have about 14 inches behind my wall, which worked out OK as far as the front channels (Ascend), but it was tougher to get the sub (Hsu VTF2) in there, so I had to be more creative with that area. Try to give yourself extra room.

Just be careful to make the space large enough in case you swap out speakers/sub. My original HSU (one in the picture) died and I bought the new one (newer version) and the dimensions weren't the same.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. The tips about distance of the speakers from the AT screen and future upgrade ability were two factors that I had completely overlooked in respect to the screen wall. I guess I have had 1 to many late nights this past week. I took the whole week off to try to make some major progress on the room.

I ended up going with 24" from the back wall to the rear of the screen wall and got it finished up today. I posted some pics in my construction thread if anyone is interested. Thanks again all.

Not sure that the 10" is necessarily depth. Just distance. So if your speakers are not directly behind the screen elevation it shouldn't be an issue if you can locate them 10" away. I haven't seen the spec., so I could be off base.

The issue is comb filtering due to reflection of high frequencies off the screen, then back off the face of the speaker. For typical microperf screens, I recommend 8" depth to my clients.

No I haven't, but am looking forward to testing it.
