How to run streaming video/audio through my Denon AV Rec. to get 5.1 channel sound?

Child of the 90s, always ran cable through my receiver before connecting to TV to get my 5.1 surround system. Now with all the streaming options (Netflix, Amazon, Google Play, etc.) that doesn't seem possible, as the signal goes straight from router to TV. I purchased a brand new Samsung 2017 Smart TV, and don't see any outputs that would allow me to run the streaming sources through to the Denon 3310 AV Receiver. Thanks.

You have three options:

1) ARC (Audio Return Channel, look it up in your TV's manual)
2) Optical out (toslink) from TV to AVR (this is my preference because ARC can be flaky)
3) Buy an outboard box for streaming services (Nvidia Shield, Roku, Amazon Fire TV, etc.) (best option because internal TV apps can be flaky as well)

Yes. That's exactly what Alan means. The common consumer optical interLINK connection was originally introduced by TOShiba, hence why some refer to it by its alternate name: TOSLINK.

Just a heads up: On some TVs there can be annoying limitations as to what the optical out can carry. This was especially true in the early years when some manufacturers allowed the consumer to conduct digital sound away from the TV only if it was derived from the internal, over-the-air (OTA) tuner. Others allowed for 2ch sound but not 5.1. Incoming sources such as DVD and Blu-ray over HDMI were not accommodated or with limitations. Things got better though around 2014, however I thought to mention it if you do run into any issues.
