'KPHO and progress' is an oxymoron. They've dug their trenches and will fight to the death in order not to provide HD. I think it's personal now. Nobody, but nobody will force this government licensed operation to perform a public service if they don't want to!

What....me angry!

hmm well i know itll cost some postage but what if we made a form letter and everyone that we know in az regardless if they have hd or not send them letters every day till they feel its not worth the 33 cents or 34 cents each day.. Doesnt the fcc review the letters they receive??? i dunno what else to do i say annoy them as much as possible.. Maybe send letters to the shows that are recorded in HD??? i dunno what to do but i say piss them off as much as possible since they dont care about their az customers . i have nothing but hatred for that station mmm i wonder why..

Just a thought. Does the ABC station broadcast the HD? If so, you might mention to the ABC newsroom they have a potential story with the irony of all the CBS HD not being utilized.

Might mention that when they list national digital stations, they put an asterisk only by KPHO noting digital but no HD.

I don't know the specs of it but ABC station does do HD but at very low power. Infact I do believe that they "forgot" to flip the switch for SPR.

But it could be worse, they could live in Tucson. Our ABC wont make the may deadline. But CBS is coming up this December.:D

Subtlety does not work here...

We've had newspaper articles in the Phoenix area pointing out the lack of HD responsibility of KPHO. National forums don't want to help, in fact they are usually wrong -- touting that since KPHO transmits DTV, the also pass through the CBS HD content --WRONG!

Meredith Corp., KPHO's owners seem to take an adversarial stance in this, saying that the size of the HD audience is insignificant. Yet when asked if satellites can carry the HD CBS feed, they absolutely refuse to grant the rights. Not only do they hold CBS HD hostage in Phoenix, they are hypocrites about it.

Now, I wouldn't rally give a damn about the whole deal if we were just talking about "Touched by an Angel" or other crappy CBS network programming. But we missed the Super Bowl in HD last year.

I caught the VP of Mitsubishi Digital touting their sets as the wave of the future in the Phoenix area because of the Mitsubishi/CBS deal to do HD. He was red-faced when I pointed out he was mistaken (after calls to the station manager and CBS headquarters in New York), but the rest of us in the area with HD capable sets are just mad.

Why not be the first ones to stage an HDTV

picket ? You could do something like walk in

fake shackles and have signs that say "held

hostage by KPHO". Its garanteed to get on the

evening news. I've been dying to see a real live

HDTV protest !

Because I left my big round nose and floppy shoes somewhere and can't find them.

Seriously, I'm not going to be a clown to get attention from a company that treats the most technically adept viewing public as insignificant. The FCC allocated airspace for stations to transmit HDTV, and they are dragging their feet, hoping to use it for more profitable ventures. There are a lot of places to point fingers here, but the bottom line is that in other major cities, HDTV is available. Heck, in Phoenix, HDTV is available except on the one network that is putting the most effort into it: CBS. Either HDTV is going to happen or it's not. We're doing our best. KPHO and Meredith are doing their worst.

And of course this would have to be in HD. Maybe Mark Cuban could broadcast it nationally on HDNet.:)

Well we Nashvillians will get to join you shortly. Meredith owns our NBC affiliate, WSMV. Of course, NBC only has Leno and Crossing Jordan, but it's the principle of the matter.

When the CBS affiliate, WTVF, went on the air last week, the GM of WSMV was quick to point out that "HDTV has been a total failure." What a bunch of losers.

I'm surprised Jens hasn't added his $.02.

I, too, am still frustrated that KPHO has not only dropped the ball, they've buried it. So I invited my, ummm, twin from Canada to pay a visit with his ExpressVu.

Hello Florida and Florida State!

Not that it will do much good but I did just send the following email to CBS. If others follow suit is sure couldn't hurt could it?

Hello,

First let me congratulate CBS for being a leader in pioneering HDTV broadcasting.

Unfortunately I live in Phoenix where Meridith Broadcasting owns your affilate KPHO TV 5. They seem to think that having a digital signal is sufficient and they have no desire to broadcast in HDTV.

I do not know how long their current contract with CBS lasts but I'd like to suggest that someone advise them that unless they get with the 21st century you will look for a replacement when their contract is up. I would imagine that channel 3, a former ABC affilate and now independent for the past several years, would probably be very happy to provide the proper equipment and would love to be a CBS station.

Thank you for letting me air my concerns. I really do admire your network for being a leader and investing in this new technology before the bottom line probably justified it.

Hey, I just noticed this thread. It slipped through my scans, Lloyd

Well, what can I add. I tried to schedule another meeting in late August for 9-11 of our HDTV Society and the local AV dealer response has been very slim...and after 9-11 I didn't felt like it was appropriate to reschedule the meeting for a while. Other things had more priority than HDTV. Anyway, in order to get something going here in the Valley we need the local dealer support. And I mean more than just some nice words and a free room to meet ;)

We need to start a PR campaign and that costs"dineros", anything else is just a waste of time. KPHO will not do anything voluntary and their affiliate status contract with CBS is probably good for 20 years or more, beginning with 1995 I believe. And that is set in stone !

Whoa! Twenty years. Surely that can't be right? Had a conversation with someone at a local station awhile back. he didn't give me the exact term. But, I had the distinct impression it was for a much shorter period than 20 years.

Anyone in the know willing to answer this question? You guys in Phoenix and Nashville have my sympathy. Had it not been for Tribune ponying up for the equipment before they sold our CBS affil to Meredith, I might be crying too.

I have an inside source at independent Channel 3 and believe me, they are not interested in digital or HD signal transmission if they can help it!

And our local KPHO-CBS is the PITS!!!! ABSOLUTELY.

Steve,

well maybe KTVK (Ch.3) might not like HDTV/Digital TV, but at least their parent company A.H. Belo is very much PRO HDTV. Belo owns WFAA-TV (ABC) in Dallas and that station is one of the biggest proponents of HDTV.

So, at least we have some hope here. I really want to see the D-backs in HD next Year
