Multi-room speaker setup with HEOS (Marantz receiver)

I've dug around the site and read some other threads about HEOS, but could still use some advice. Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere and I just missed it.

I have a Marantz receiver in the living room, with wired speakers for stereo and HT. In the kitchen I had a little Klipsch bluetooth speaker (The One) that I liked pretty well until it decided to suddenly stop working (still waiting on warranty/service response from Klipsch, but that's another story). Here's the question: if I wanted to put a small powered speaker in there, could I connect it wirelessly through the HEOS app/my receiver, rather than having to run bluetooth audio through my phone? And would it have to be a Denon speaker, or would any powered speaker work?

I had the Klipsch bluetooth speaker before upgrading the living room setup. But now it seems kind of silly to not have both rooms integrated, if possible.

If you want to use the Denon/HEOS app then you need a HEOS speaker either the 150, 250 or 350 models. This is the least expensive way to stay in the HEOS architecture. You can use any powered/active speakers with an input and connect them to a HEOS LINK or any passive speakers with their HEOS AMP. The LINK or AMP would be a more expensive way to do this unless you already have nice speakers you want to use. I wouldn't go that route with a typical bluetooth speaker.

Thanks, that's helpful. Still holding out hope that Klipsch will either repair or replace the current speaker I have in there (or that I'll figure out how to fix it myself). If not, I guess I'll have to decide if it's worth the money for one of those Denon speakers. Though would be nice to have them on the same system, and to play via WiFi rather than Bluetooth--both for sound quality and so my phone doesn't have to stay in the kitchen while it's playing.

Are you using the HEOS app now with your receiver? what model receiver do you have? It may have a zone 2 that you could take advantage of ...

First and foremost, the easiest way is to get a HEOS speaker - check accessoriesforless.com for a refub. some to be had via ebay as well.

however- this is a little convoluted: if your receiver has a zone 2 pre-out, connect that to a BT transmitter. your Klipsch(if repaired) should be able to receiver the BT signal depending on range.

good luck, rock on

I do use the HEOS app now, but just for playing internet radio and Spotify in the living room. The receiver is a Marantz SR5014, which I actually got from accessories4less. It has a built-in BT transmitter, but I haven't loved it when I tried using it for BT headphones. Felt a little wonky and hard to control volume--the Bluetooth option through the Roku was better. Though to be fair I haven't messed with it much.

Thanks for the advice on this. I ended up finding a HEOS 3 for about $150 on accessories4less, so figured it was worth a shot. So far I'm happy with it. I actually prefer the sound a bit to the Klipsch, I think (not that either is better/worse, necessarily, just different). I did really like the retro look of the Klipsch, but ... well, I didn't like that it stopped working, or how difficult it's been to get any response from their customer service. And being able to play the same thing in the living room and the kitchen is pretty nice!

It syncs up well in my experience. I mean, I have them in separate rooms, but they're adjoining, so I think if the sync was off I'd probably notice. Really my only complaint is that the app can be a little weird sometimes, like it won't find the kitchen speaker and I'll have to reboot it, though that's only occasionally, not a regular thing. I also wish there was a way to send stuff to the speaker outside of the app, like w/ AirPlay or Bluetooth, so I could listen to a podcast through the podcast app I use, or play sound from something I'm streaming on my laptop while making dinner. Though maybe there is some way to do that and I just haven't figured it out yet.
