Need Suggestions for 5.1 setup @ $700

I'm putting together a 5.1 system for my Samsung 1080p DLP TV. I'm going to use it as my music system too. I just ordered the Yamaha RX-V2600 for a receiver (130w / channel). For speakers, I've been trying to keep the total price under $7-800. Divided up, I'm aiming for $2-300 for the front, $100 for center, $150 for sub, $200 for rear.

This is what I've found in that range so far that fits my needs:

o Sub- Sony SAWM500 12†150W- $150

o Center- Sony SSCN550H 150W- $80

o Front- Yamaha NS125FP 120W - $200

o Rear- ??? Don't know. Must be small - $200

So, a couple of questions:

1) What other front speakers are out there around $200? Given the receiver puts out 130W / channel, I have a some concern that the speakers are only 120W. Is this a big deal? What else is available for this price w/ a higher power rating?

2) What are some ideas for rear channel speakers at $200 or less. These will be ceiling mounted (not in-ceiling) and need to be as small as possible, due to their mount location (one is in a corner near a shelf and wine rack). Small size is important here.

3) Is it considered a big deal to mix and match brands of speakers? The Yamaha NS series has a center channel speaker around the same price so it would match the fronts I'm looking at. But rather than the Sony's 150w it would be 120w. I figured a higher rating would equate to a cleaner sound and that would be more important than a brand match...

Not to sound like a jerk but why spend all that money on a 1080p a 2600 and then skimp out on the speaker system? The 2600 can run a much better system than that at least buy the SVS small system its about $1000. Spending more money on the speakers is going to make a much bigger difference in the sound that buying a expensive receiver. Just my $.002 but I think most people on this forum would agree with me. Good luck with the search.

No offense taken. I've been poking around on this forum long enough to have been expecting a response along those lines.

The system you mentioned is only a couple hundred dollars more than I'm planning to spend. That makes all the difference?

The reason I'm leaning against an all in one system is the need to make the rear speakers as small as possible. As far as I've seen the package systems have 4 of the same speaker plus the sub. Just because size is a limitation for 2 of my speakers, it doesn't make sense to make the front ones tiny too where I have more room to play with.

I am spending almost as much on the speakers as I am on the 2600 (which I ordered for $900). So my ratio doesn't seem way off. Plus I'm also later adding 2 more speakers for a second zone (and later a third) that will be another $200 a pair.

Are the specific models or brands of the speakers I mentioned originally considered poor quality, or is it strictly the price-point that makes it appear I'm skimping?

Anyway, that's why I'm asking. What other affordable speakers are out there. The SVS system is too large to fit where my rears are going. In fact, I'm probably leaning toward the Boston Acoustics BravoBII 2 as they are the most compact I've found...

You should stick with the same brand for all 5 speakers but at the very least the LCR.

You didn't specify your room size but here goes:

You can't go wrong with this setup,

Fronts: Athena AS-B1.2 $119.95 a pair.

product_name=Audition%20B1%2E2%20Speakers%20-%20Black,%20Pair

Center: Athena AS-C1 $139.50

name=Audition%20C1%2E2%20Center%20Channel%20-%20Black

Surrounds: Athena S.5 $49.88 each and they come with wall mounts.

TOTAL: $359.21

You could also check out the JBL E series at B&H they sound good and are reasonably priced.

i'll second this recommendation. pair this setup with a good sub and you'll have a very nice ~ $600 5.1 setup. the S.5 speakers are fairly small and come with great mounting brackets.

sony speakers....not so good. :eek:

I asked why you were spending so much on a receiver and not as much on the speakers because the retail price is around $1400 but if you are getting it for $900 then it makes sense sorry. The suggestions above are also good you could also try the athena micra6 system. Best buy is selling them for $300 the originally cost twice that. I have heard them and the sound great and for that price you could buy two more of the surrounds and still have money to spare maybe some high quality speaker wire.

This is the kind of advice I was looking for! I was itching to pull the trigger on a purchase so the speakers would come about the same time as the AVR. So after your advice had a second thumbs up and doing a quick bit of reading about Athena, I took the leap and went w/ the Athena AS B2.2's for the front, the AS-C1 for the center, and even the AS-P4000 sub. (I also ordered the Boston Acoustics Brovo II's for rear channel. Unfortunately the price I was expecting was per speaker, but I really liked their corner mount-ability and small size, so I went for it anyway.)

Thanks for the info. Now I gotta sit & wait for the toys to arrive...
