Samsung S90C: 4K UHD, HDR10+ Adaptive, FreeSync Premium, HDMI 2.1 144Hz

The intent of this thread is to provide a focused space to share S95C/S90C/S89C (w/ 2nd Gen Panel) recommended settings (based on measurements) and calibration outputs. It is not to discuss the S95C/S90C/S89C, beyond recommended settings concerns, or to troubleshoot the display. 2023 Samsung QD-OLED owners, service menu, and gaming threads have been established to provide support for those other topics (links provided below). The less off topic content here the easier it will be for everyone to find what they are looking for (Settings and Performance Results).

How to check your S90C panel type

You need a service remote or virtual remote (I use this one on Android and here is an iOS app)

Press Mute, 1, 1, 9, then the OK button (center of directional pad). This will bring up the Hospitality Menu after a brief moment (don't play around here you could reset your settings) then press 1, 2, 3, 4 then wait for the Service Menu menu to pop up. You now can use your normal remote again. Go down to "advanced" using the direction pad/circle and press up on volume for 5 seconds and a new menu will appear. Select "EPA" then look at your ana_peak values, if they are in the 500s you have a gen 2 panel. Power off when you are done to leave the service menu.

Best of luck!

Thanks. i have the original samsung oled from 2015, so I had a remote for that one, which worked for this tv as well. I do have the gen 2 panel, even though i saw others who had version 3 and august builds who still had 1st gen panel.

What sucks, though, is who knows if I can even keep it because for some odd reason my tivo isn't working on it. It goes to a black screen.

Do you know if any professional calibrators have shared settings with gen 2 panel? I wonder if I should try settings from a s95c, since it would be the same panel.

Thanks for posting this information as I just ordered a 65 inch S90C. I have a question about your HDR settings though for the Anapeak 588 you have listed. Should we use BT2020 color 15 for game HDR and color 20 for FMM HDR even with we dont mess around with CMS settings? I'm just confused here if I should use P3 or BT2020 for HDR content, given P3 is more accurate. I saw Classy's settings for the S95c and he recommended P3, though thats obviously a different model.... I really wish Samsung would fix this auto color space issue. If the colors are accurate enough in BT2020 with those color adjustments and not doing CMS changes ideally Id like to go with that and not worry about it going forward. I would just use P3 in games but based on Vincents reviews P3 can introduce more posterization and I HATE that in games....

Current Xbox set up guide w/ 2.2 Gamma Game Mode SDR luminance settings (peak brightness off).

"Shadow Detail" (SD) works like "Fine Tune Dark Areas" on LG sets with this pattern, though when configured properly and using the right black level combo (Auto/Low Standard) the closed eye should not be visible. +1 SD will make it faint up close, +3 visible from couch, and +5 visible from anywhere given appropriate ambient light for an OLED TV (This was observed after break-in of the panel). I don't recommend using SD in normal operation (lifts/kills true blacks), you'll take better advantage of your OLED TV's contrast range if you just reduce ambient light to better see dark areas.

The sun will fade as contrast increases (not brightness) and at max contrast on this set you still won't have to worry about clipping it completely (not visible) as long as you are configurated for accuracy: "Original" Preset, CE OFF, Peak Brightness OFF, and BT.1886 + 2 for 2.2 Gamma which is default Gamma for the Xbox. Ultimately, failing this pattern is not the sun being visible but rather that you can't see it at all.

The following are the recommended values for Xbox system level HDR calibration on a 77" S90C (press all top triggers/bumpers on controller simultaneously during HDR test patterns to see values) and likely any other S90c w/ second gen panel factory set to ANA PEAK 588:
MinTML: 0.000
MaxTML: 2000
MaxFFTML: 2000

Note: There have been some reports that AP512 units tone map to 1300 nits instead of 2000 nits.

Game Mode SDR Settings (all work with test images as described):
Brightness/Contrast=Nits (with +2 BT.1886/2.2 Gamma)
25/38=100
32/38=120
47/38=160
50/47=200

Remove +2 BT.1886 from settings for 2.4 Gamma

I'll fill this in with helpful pics and test results soon.

Sorry for harping on this again, but I still feel that this is a misleading statement. It only works like FTDS when doing black level calibration and looking at a pattern. (Because that is all you see)
In real content it does not work the same way at all. Something which the Gaming Tech channel is right about.
I still critize his videos though, there are other ways of tackling black level raise that he does not try.
(They have their drawbacks of course, may not always be worth it)

Quote of Youtube comments I've left:
"Please do more research for your S95C videos. There are other ways of manipulating the image on Samsung TVs to fight black-level raise, I've commented about this before on your older videos. Engage Contrast Enhancer , it will crush blacks, High crushes the most. Then adjust ST/SD and Contrast to mitigate the over-brightened midtones and clipped highlights."

"Also, the S95B [2022 models] doesn't have "Active Tonemapping" toggle. You can only turn off Game HDR, to get DTM close to Active TM"

You would do well to add your WB so everyone can add your "warm2" white to their unit (could it work!?).
For example, these are my 2 s90cs with different values. I add (2 pt menu) to unit 1: RG +4 BG +2 and I get the same grayscale.

Technical comparison between this and the last release showing the trade offs as both are very close and viable

If your find -ST crushes black with your specific panel you can try the following settings instead with the Samsung CMS adjustments.

Brightness 50, Contrast 48, Color 21 (with no -ST and Offset sweep)

This may also be a better alternative for grayscale prior to panel break in (roughly 200 hours w/ comp cycles).

@vitaliy vasylkov was kind enough to validate these settings were compatible with AP512 S90Cs (some 55 and 65" models) and requires no -ST or Offset, only Contrast 49. He also validated these setting for AP 667 on S90Cs (S95C mod) with no SD or ST adjustments and 50 brightness/50 Contrast.

Thank you Vitaliy!

I'm working on some tweaks for FMM also, should be available soon.
Are these the correct most recent settings with the input set to PC mode? I thought sharpness should be bumped up to 10 with PC mode?

Hi L337Fool
I am trying to create DV block whit my vrroom and I am using yours AP 512 calibrations settings but I am not sure which RGB x/y color coordinate to use.

588 and 38 respectively. I plan to keep my S90C stock aside from QoL changes like enabling PVR and disabling Auto Game Bar. I'm looking forward to it too! Thanks for the encouragement.

This thread is great! I have a weird obsession with optimizing the settings with 0 “know how” and even less ability to tell if what I’m looking at is accurate. Two of my kids love “native” mode and the oldest wants it to look “accurate” 😂. My wife is sick of hearing about it. I used your latest settings on my PS5 and it looks great. Thanks for doing this.

#20 ·
Thanks for posting these. I’m currently setup using Movie mode, what is the advantage of FMM over Movie mode?

#22 ·
There isn't one (they are the same) but generally speaking for the sake of organization FMM can be your more conservative config for critical viewing and MM less conservative. In my case I set MM to be a bit brighter. It will probably be FMM = 100 nits and MM = 160 nits for me when all is said and done. I'll probably provide the accurate 200 nit values for those who need more punch. With HDR (may add MM later) it's really just employing "active"/DTM to deal with brighter environments.

Thanks for setting this thread.

I have S90C with a 2nd gen panel bit with 512 Ana Peak.
I will calibrate my set in October once it will have enough hours and share my results here.

Hello,

What are the settings to apply with The Windows HDR Calibration app for win 11? with my "old" LGC1 I had followed this tuto but now I'm lost because no one mentions it.

#24 · (Edited)
You should not really have to jump through hoops here. Just ignore the test pattern windows for everything after the near black pattern and set the others to the actually peak brightness of the display. Approximately 1050 nit for ANA PEAK 512 I believe and 1150 for for ANA PEAK 588. This is with GameHDR Basic enabled (GC 15 w/ custom BT.2020 settings recommended).

After evaluating the game under various conditions/scenes here are my recommended S90C (2nd Gen/588 ANAPEAK) Cyberpunk 2077 2.0/Phantom Liberty HDR10 PQ Settings.

Interesting seeing "Tone-Mapping Midpoint" at 1.20, from the desc it sounds like 1.00 would be the most correct value.
What does the EOTF and luminance-curve look like with these settings?
Do you have any more in-depth information on how the tonemapping midpoint manipulates the image?

I want to mention something about second gen panels. I had to get my S90C 65inch replaced cause it had a stuck pixel and considering it was a 1st gen panel (originally thought I had 2nd gen), I figure this is my chance for a 2nd gen. It arrived today and the sticker on the back has a date of September 2023 (Mexico), though the anapeak values are 682. So apparently they were still making 1st gen panels up till September, or still are for that matter, or 682 being a first gen panel is not correct. Major bummer though. Is it concrete this is a 1st panel or misinformation that they're not making 1st gen panels anywhere? I recall reading a bunch of threads that indicate they stopped making 1st gen panels months ago...

I dont know if the September date means anything then based on when the panel was made...It can be deceptive though cause at first I got my hopes up with the September date, but it basically means nothing apparently.

Hi, what version did it say on the box? I just went to best buy and found serial below SN: 0FLB3CAW600Version: FA01 I believe I read somewhere that the version can also determine if it is Gen 1 or 2. I wonder if these are still 1st Gen

No problem, I'm looking forward to filling it up we more info as time goes on. Contrast was reduced slightly to correct over tracking thus preserving detail. These panels are significantly brighter than their predecessors even when they are software limited/capped. They need to be reined in just a little bit even @ A_P 588.
