The Onkyo TX-NR6100 & The Costco TX-NR6050 Are The Same Receiver...

I think they are probably the exact same receivers, they are most likely just software limited. I wonder if you could upload the 6100 firmware to the 6050 and it would unlock the 10 extra watts of power and the THX Certification... They both draw 635 Watts and the rear and front panels are identical.

Just like all of Intel's CPUs are the exact same, except, no, they aren't:

That they use the same firmware isn't proof of anything either.

Maybe Onkyo wasn't able to source enough components to meet the specs of the 6100, so they used lesser spec'd components for the 6050.

This is all just speculation, both by me and by you. Yes, it could just be market segmentation. Then again, maybe not. You need more than exterior appearance and firmware to make a case beyond reasonable doubt.

It's not a big surprise - the costco unit is a similar unit customized for costco. Retailers and manufacturers have been doing this for decades where they'd get exclusive units. Usually some minor thing is changed - e,g., maybe an extra input or a deleted input.

Sometimes a manufacturer sells the exact same unit as two separate models - one destined for big box retailers and the other for speciality dealers.

The differences are usually minor - easy part substitutions like capacitors, or changes to warranties, or minor cosmetic things (Yamaha has a fifth foot).
