It is finally starting to arrive! I have not spent a great deal amount with it but I figured I better start a thread soon before someone kills me!

I have my 805 hooked up like this. HDMI 1 is HD DVD(sending in 1080p/60, HDMI 2 is Blu ray(sending in 1080p/24 or 60), HDMI 3 is DTHEATER JVC HMDT100(1080i) or my XBOX 360 ELITE(sending in 1080p)... I use 2 two of the components for DirecTV HD DVRs. My main DirecTV HD DVR (HR20-100 BLACK) goes straight to my VP. So far after doing a bunch of tests between the inputs I can say I am very impressed with the sound Quality. I will most likely have a Pioneer 94 player here on Friday so I will be able to do more comparisons with a blu ray player that can do advanced audio codecs. The Dolby TrueHD sounds remarkable. even my wife was very impressed with it. She could tell a difference right away! I am planning to watch all of The Matrix movies this weekend and now I can't wait! I do plan to get the 905 (I really could use 4 HDMI inputs plus the 2 OUTS will be fun) but if I did not need the extra HDMIs then the 805 would definitely be good enough! And the BIG question people have been wondering... YES! You can make the 5.1 into 7.1 over HDMI... Thank God! Because I would not want my back surrounds taking the night off whenever we watch HD DVD or Blu ray discs.
Image
This AVR at 130 watts per channel sounds like it is doing a lot more! I have quite a few subwoofers (7) around my theater. They are stategically placed. Some you hear some you just feel.
Image
Anyway, the 805 handled them like a champ!
Image
So far so good over here. I have sent in 1080p/60 and 24 without a hitch. I have also sent in 1080i, 720p, 480p, and of course 480i. They all work well. I only plan to watch 1080i and above for the rest of my life so I may not be the best expert when it comes to 480i sources.
Image
I have to head into Chicago later this morning but I will be back tonite. If you have any questions feel free to post them and I will answer them the best I can. I apologize for not posting any pics yet. I just haven't had the time to get some done. I will as soon as I can slow down and breathe. I hope my "mini" review helps out some of you. Again, I apologize for being curt but I have just been so damn busy this week. That's why I was so dissapointed I did not get the 805 on Friday or Saturday... I have only spent about 2 or 3 hours with it so far... But if you are still wondering if this receiver is worth it, DON'T! At this price range you won't find a better sounding unit with all these codecs and features... Onkyo has out done itself with this unit. More later...

SPECIAL REQUEST:

Question: I want to use component and or HDMI input and component and or HDMI output. What does the 805 convert to what? When does the 805 downscale 1080p to 720p?

A:

For component input > 805 > HDMI OUTPUT:

480i > 480p

480p > 480p

720p > 720p

1080i > 720p

1080p > 720p

(It will convert component to HDMI with a max of 720p)

With HDMI input > 805 > HDMI OUTPUT:

480p > 480p

720p > 720p

1080i > 1080i

1080p > 1080p

(EVERYTHING IS UNTOUCHED)

For component INPUT > 805 > OUTPUT

480i > 480p

480p > 480p

720p > 720p

1080i > 1080i

1080p > 1080p

(EVERYTHING IS UNTOUCHED)

HOPE THIS HELPS!

Get a SPL meter, put it in the main listening position, or between the 2-3 main positions if you have more than one, turn on the test tone for the sub, set the trim at 0db, then adjust the volume knob on the sub until the meter reads 80-82db or so. THEN run Audyssey.

For the sub it's also critical to make sure nothing in the room is buzzing/vibrating. Obviously you want that during normal viewing too but one little buzz during calibration can really throw things off.

That definitely includes any fan(s) you may be running to keep your 805 cool(er). Those dual fans that a lot of us use are quite loud, even at low voltage. Also, my Mac mini's fan's a bit loud so I shut that off too. In fact, so's the fan(s) in my Sony XBR5 (or at least, it sounds fan-like).

Chad, I have the sub's level at about 11:00 (o'clock) which seemed to work great for me, but redoing Audyssey isn't that big of a deal, so I'l probably do it again.

Hey guys I just have a quick question regarding the digital inputs. I have an xbox 360 using the Optical 1, an Airport Express using the Optical 2, and I just installed a satellite dish to requires another optical input. I tried using the one on the front, but I can't get any sound out of it. I tried using optical 2, and it works, and putting the airport express in the front input but it won't even let me assign "front" to the airport express input (I'm using "CD" input for the airport express).

Is there something I can do? All 3 of these things only have an option for optical out and not digital coax...

Any ideas?

The front input is not re-assignable. It's only available as "Aux 2".

I guess from your response it seems like you're already fixing it but I guess not oh well. I hope it helped.

Sorry I didn't get to log-in after I got home last night. You suggestion did fix the issue (Power on player THEN receiver)! Thank you! Just goes to show how little logic you apply when you are frustrated/excitable.

Im having almost the same problem except is my l/r that wont work....I might have to send it back cause no matter what I have tryed it just dont work.

Per my reply to lorneth, by powering on the source before the receiver the issue was resolved.

If I bi-amp my front speaker with onkyo 805, can I use Back Surround pre-out into another stereo amp to drive 7.1? Or the pre-out for back surround will turn into front L/R when in bi-amp mode?

I imagine Audessey should have a crossover the signal for tweeter and bass when running in bi-amp mode for front speaker. It should cut off high freq for bass connection and vice-versa for tweater.

Yes.

No, you get the same signal from both.

Hello,

I am relocating to Japan for two years and my company is moving me over there. I would like to take my home theater equipment (rather than buy new stuff).

I have an Onkyo SR805 receiver. The power spec says the standard US-spec 120v 60hz power requirement. But will the receiver be ok running off a 100v 50hz power outlet (the standard in Japan)? I figure the reciever has to have a pretty robust power supply -- but I just wanted to see if anyone had any experience with this?

It will not work in Japan.

That's a 20v drop. I wouldn't do it. If it was a little higher say 125-130 ya, that way the 805 would only take what it needed. But 100 is way too low.

I suppose it would work if I used a step-up transformer like this one. Then I suppose there would be no issue. The transformer takes the 100v power and steps it up to 120v power.

I cannot believe how inexpensive those are! When I was in the PI, something like that cost some real $$$.

BTW: if it doesn't convert 50Hz to 60Hz it won't do the trick... at least I don't think so.

Im in japan, and can tell you first hand all you need is the step up transformer. you can buy them out here if you want, they have better ones here. I have two in my theater room running my gear in my audio rack. Where in Japan are you going?

Ok....this may be a VERY stupid question, but i just realized that my 805 that i picked up only two day's ago......doesn't have any stickers on the front. Are they not suposed to?? It's just black. Might i have got a referb?????

I Asked that exact question. "This is new right, not a referb" and he said " we don't sell referb's here, we'd like to but there too hard to get because they are in high demand in the states" How can i find the build date or any info along those lines? I'll i can see is the SN#

I ordered this one -- after talking with the sales consultant. I just figured that virtually everything is cheaper over here and I have plenty of space in my shipping container.

I will be living in Tokyo (right near Shibuya station). I'll be in a hi-rise. It's a expat deal -- so I have a pretty good setup.

Where do you live?

Thanks for the help.
