Do I have to use a digital optical audio cable when using component video cables?

My new Vizio 50" has both composite and component inputs. My satellite receiver has both too. Is it possible to use component for the video and composite for the audio? If so how will the TV know to take the audio from the composite when it is in the component input selection? I don't want to buy the optical audio cable unless I have to. TIA for any suggestions or comments.

Are you hooking your audio up to the tv or a surround receiver? And component cables will carry the audio as well as the video. If you are hooking up to a surround receiver my suggestion would be a tos link cable which can be had for cheap at monoprice.com. I've bought cables from them and they are veryu well made and fast shipping. Dont get sucked into the Monster cable BS either. Thats my suggestion.

There should be audio inputs next to the component inputs on your Vizio that use standard rca connectors. Check the manual. You don't have to use optical unless that's your only option.

Untrue. Component cables carry only video.

You'll need red/white stereo if you want to go to the TV. There will be a set of these that go with the component input. You won't be able to use any other audio source if you are using the component input. The answer to how will it know is, it won't.

If you want to go to a receiver, you'd ideally have either optical or coaxial digital (orange) to the receiver. You could also use the red/white if you only have a stereo receiver.

Well then I guess my 5 component cable hooked from my SA 8300 HD-DVR to my Olevia 537h doesnt carry the audio to the tv it must magically go from the STB to my TV

Please research your answers before you post and say something is untrue because MY COMPONENT CABLES CARRY AUDIO AS WELL :D

LOL...I guess some people just like to spend money on good cables. ;)

If you are going to spend the money, go optical I say. :D

So like I said my audio from the STB to the TV just magically goes to the TV....... :)

Your five-conductor cable is a component cable (red/green/blue) and an audio cable (red/white) in one bundle.

I promise you I pay a lot of attention to giving a correct answer every single time.

While we're at it ... this is incomplete also ...

RCA red/white carries analog stereo audio. Sometimes you will see a stereo minijack associated with a DVi or HDMI input. This is the same as you find on a computer sound card. An adapter to RCA red/white is readily available.

Optical or coaxial digital (orange) are digital connections that can carry the full range of audio including surround. A coaxial digital cable is an ordinary 75-ohm connection so a video cable or a third of a component set can be used.

But here is my question: with the above hookup how will I get sound? I have to put the TV in component input mode so how will the tv know to get the audio from the composite audio port?

This is the question that I originally tried to say which has not been answered yet.

You can't do it that way. You must use a red/white audio cable from your satellite receiver to the audio input that goes with your component. Check your manual or the markings to see which that is. So your full hookup will be red/green/blue/red/white to the component video and its audio.

In addition to this if you have a surround receiver you can use the optical or coaxial digital hookup to it.

(Or, maybe there is a terminology problem -- composite is a video hookup with a yellow jack -- it doesn't carry audio either and will have its own set of red/white jacks.)

I have a 35' component/composite audio cable from monoprice running from my computer in another room to my receiver. There are five cables attached together - red/green/blue for component video and red/white for composite audio. Since I wanted to use digital audio, I just peeled the outermost audio cable away from the other cables and put it aside. I use the remaining audio cable as a digital coax connection. If your STB has digital coax out it would be much better to use it instead of the composite.

This is correct.

The sound comes in seperately from the video - both in component and composite cables (the red and white tipped connectors). The difference is in how the video picture is produced.

ok and heres a picture of my COMPONENT connection to my TV NOT COMPOSITE

May not be clearly visible but other owners of an OLevia 537H will back me up the top two connections are for AUDIO and is clearly marked on the TV as COMPONENT *******!!!!!!!

#25 ·
And heres another picture of the back of my SA 8300 HD-DVR and I would really like 1 of you "professionals" to point out in either picture where it says composite....since composite connection on the STB is not even an option
Image

And the composite connection on the tv is below the component connection and CLEARLY has seperate audio connections so show me where I am wrong
