Firewire connected camera not recognized

Firstly, I have searched this forum and googled but no answers have helped me.

Camera: Sony TRV-20 miniDV. Firewire port (i.Link); S-video port; composit A/V ports.

System particulars:

Desktop is running Win7 Ultimate x64. Rosewill PCIe FireWire 1394a card. Using (trying to use) Movie Studio Platinum 13 and WinDV to capture video.

Laptop is an old Sony Vaio FXA53 that I pulled out of the closet. WinXP x32. Firewire port (i.Link)

Desktop problems - - added firewire card this morning. Device manager says it is working correctly. Connect to camera > power it up and select "VCR" mode for playback > start either software program and camera is not detected. Movie Studio (when "video capture" is started) says "Please connect a device." I have been all thru the options and preferences dialogs and the camera is not listed. None of the multiple combinations of changes have done anything. When I try capturing with WinDV (a very old but supposedly bullet-proof program) I am told "No video device found."

Laptop problems are exactly the same.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing the driver in Win7. I have tried installing the legacy driver. I have tried 5 different firewire cables. I have tried powering the camera on first. I have tried powering the computers on first. I have tried cleaning the registry. NOTHING is working and I have already spent 5 1/2 hours today trying to get this resolved. ANY ideas? PLEASE.

One question in particular - - when connecting the camera to a computer, should it show up in windows explorer as an added drive? Mine is not doing that on either the desktop or the laptop.
