Infact I have seen digital PJ with 720 rez that are much softer than my own XG, no kidding it is a fact. They look sharper only with stright edges. CRT's ain't soft if set up right but certaily smooth which mistakenly led to be called soft.

I have an old Barco Graphics 400, running from an HTPC at 1280x720. The text, while not being razor sharp - lets just say it looks like I have font smoothing on when I don't - is perfectly usable and readable at default sizes.

And then after 6 months of getting it the best that you can, have a pro come in and in 15 minutes you realize you weren't even close. Mike Parker, Terry F. (chuchuf), and Ken W have the magic touch from years of professional experience.
I see your point. It's been about half a year since I've had my PJ, and haven't had it checked up with Tim (being near Scottsdale, I wouldn't consider anyone else). I'm just afraid of the cost of bringing the old dog in and getting a thorough checkup.

Is it just me, or are CRT owners generally a little "frugal"?

I need to hook up a PC to my 9500LC and give that a shot.

I ran my 8000 at 1080p briefly with an MP5 and NeuNeo combination, and it was impressively sharp, but at the time, that particular 8000 was running my FrankenYokes. That helps beam spot size considerably in my experience. It was also a very well tweaked machine anyway.

I'd actually hesitate to say that my 9500LC is currently as well set up as my 8000 was.

In fact, I'd say I have a way to go before getting the most out of it. I've had a problem

getting blue to be as tightly focused as I'd like it to, but it has to be pretty close as I can

get the brightness drop as I change the electronic focus setting in the right direction.

Still, it doesn't seem sharp enough. Weird.

I'm still looking for a set of Sony 1292 or maybe even G70 focus/astig yokes, just in case anyone has any available. A set of G90 units would be even better, but I rather doubt I'll find any of those any time soon. Any of these types should be suitable for my FrankenYoke II mod I'm planning to try. Sharper focus on an astig-equipped Marquee is the goal.

Very nice, Kal!

I had the same challenge of trying to get the camera close enough for a macro shot without creating those shadows. I ended up using a side angle, but that throws off the camera's focus in the rest of the picture.

I tried to take a photo of the windows resolution selection box to show everyone what a G90 doesn't look like :p However my digial camera failed me. I couldn't get anything that looked even close to what I see with my eyes.... grrr... supposed to be a semi-decent point and shoot too (Kodak V550), it's just not as good as my old Canon G2 (RIP). All my pictures were much softer and full of noise that just isn't there on the screen.

I tried long exposures, short exposures. Up close with macro, way back with zoom.

Wow Kal, that high of a res and still seeing scan lines? I especially like the razor sharp focus and perfect convergence. Makes my old BG800 look super fuzzy :)

Which brings me to this question- Anybody got an ES focus PJ like a Barco 800, ECP or Sony 12xx that they can take close up high res screenshots of, just for the fun of comparison? Kal's BG800 screenshots were amazing, I would have loved to see those close to the screen like we have in this thread.

Hi there all

Screenshots of text look excellent, damn that G90 thingys better than the Sony multiscan 21" monitor im typing this on now

Ive managed to dig out one of my, lowly barco 701, 07ms tubes, its a bit blurry as it was done by hand and not on a tripod, but its pretty sharp at 1024 x 768, on a 72" wide 4:3 screeen, hope this helps

I'm glad this thread came up. For a while now I have been unhappy with the sharpness I get on my Momitsu upscaling to 960P. Thing was, I didn't know if the problem was my setup of the projector, or limitations of the DVD format. Of course, It also doesn't help that I sit about 1.2 screens widths away. After seeing those screenshots, I finally decided to hook my laptop up the projector, fearing unreadable text. To my surprise, it wasn't too bad! Not as good as the screenshots (still learning how to dial in my projector) but better than I was expecting. At 1600 x 1200 things were getting blurry but still readable. 1152 x 864 was not bad at all, even though for whatever reason it only filled about 2/3 of the screen.

Now I really want Blu-Ray to come out! We need that resolution!

The curves af a Torus are pretty noticeable when showing a windows desktop...
