List of angled in-ceiling speakers (and why on-ceiling bookshelf is better) for Immersive Sound formats (Atmos, Auro, DTS:X)

Ideally you want all speakers in your home theatre setup aimed at the listeners. The ideal way to achieve this is with bookshelf speakers mounted on-ceiling with an appropriate bracket to aim them exactly where they need to be.

A good alternative is outdoor speakers as they are shaped to fit flush to the ceiling and come with brackets. I have just done this to my room - see bottom of this post for more info.

Using bookshelf speakers also allows you to get a closer match to your ear level speakers. There is a lot of debate whether this is important or not, but I believe the closer to identical you can have all your speakers, the better it should sound. However this is often impractical, expensive or aesthetically unacceptable. So I will add this piece of advise :

Use the best, and best matching, speakers you can afford, justify, install and like the looks of.

If that means $75 Monoprice then go for it and enjoy, just don't go listen to a higher end setup because "What the Ears hear not, the Heart craves not"

Please feel free to add any speakers you know of that I have missed - please post the manufacturers link and I can just paste it straight to this post.

But if you must use in-ceilings then 45deg angled baffle is the best for a x.x.2 and x.x.4 setup, As you can see from below they are expensive but there are 30 and 15deg ones available.

Straight down-firing in-ceilings should be avoided at all costs as you can see by this drawing with 90deg dispersion straight down-firing puts the MLP out of that dispersion area :

Unfortunately angled baffle in-ceilings are few and far between. So I just did a quick Duck-Duck-Go search and this is what I found (all prices are for single speaker and some angles are best guesses from pics or drawings since not all manufacturers list the actual angle) :

45deg :

Monoprice : Monoprice Alpha Ceiling Speaker Dual 5.25in Carbon Fiber Surround 2-way Vari-Angled (single) - Monoprice.com : $80 - You have to mount these rectangular ones on an angle (to the walls, not the ceiling) as you can't rotate those for perfect aiming.

Or you can use angled enclosure speakers for on-wall or on-ceiling mounting :

15 deg :
Chane : Chane A4.5 : $300pr
SVS : Prime Elevation : $250
Dali : ALTECO C-1 | Height information speaker | DALI Speakers : $600pr

30deg :
Ascendo : The6 PASSIVE WEDGE 30 : $???

or ceiling mount speakers :
Speakercraft : AIM MDU Single Box Speaker | SpeakerCraft $???

And now to what I think might be the ideal Atmos height speaker : Kicker KB6 $75ea

I have 8" Wharfedale PA speakers all round in my 7.1.4 setup, but I wanted to add front wides and 2 more heights, but the Wharfedales are too expensive new ($300AUD each) and none have come up recently secondhand. So I started looking for something comparable with a compression driver tweeter and the only things I could find was Behringer PK108 PA speakers or no-name brand PAs, but even they are expensive here.
Then I came across Kicker KB6 / KB6000 outdoor / marine speakers with CD tweeters and 6.5" woofers. They retail here for $150AUD ($150USD a pair in the States) but I scored 4 from a pawn broker for $150.
Just finished testing them and they sound great, and as expected with a CD they have no trouble playing loud.
Being an outdoor speaker they are compact(ish) and come with a bracket for easy fixing to the ceiling and easy aiming to perfect spot.
I am a big fan of having all identical speakers but after replacing my 4 4" bookshelf height speakers with the 8" Wharfedale PAs, I didn't notice as much of an improvement as I expected so I am prepared to run non-identical heights, and these mean I can afford to get another 2 to make it 6 :)

No love for PSB?

CS AIC 860 (IN-CEILING 15 degree angled woofer baffle with fully pivoting/aimable tweeter)
CS AIC 860 – 6" Angled In-Ceiling Speaker - PSB Speakers

I'm seeing $649 each on Crutchfield and $849 a pair on eBay ($427.50 each)

These go well with the PSB Imagine series of speakers according to their documentation.

No love for the Focal 300 iclcr5? I use them in my theater room and love them
Added both to my first post :)

Remember I wasn't saying my list was anything other than what I found with a quick internet search.
I am not personally recommending any of these speakers - simply listing what is available.

You will still be right on the edge of good dispersion. IMO you don't wan't to be more than 15deg off-axis to most speakers.

Not in-ceiling… but I use on-ceiling SVS Prime Elevations. They have about a 20 degree slant. At $250 each they fall in that price gap.
I will add an on-ceiling section since there are a few of them available.

Your link to the RSL C34e's is to the now-discontinued speakers.
I will update all my links to try and point to manufacturers website.

Many of us have couches quite close to the rear wall,
My ears are 2 feet in front of the back wall.
What would you suggest using for rears for that kind of "less than ideal" situation that can' t be changed for a 5.2.4?
In or on ceiling firing straight down?
In or on ceiling NOT aimed at the listener but angled at the rear wall for a "bounce" effect?
Thanks.
I was hoping to keep this thread focused on just what speakers are available. But since you asked - I have used the bounce effect for my side surrounds and the closer to the wall definitely helps so a pair directly above your head aimed at the rear wall could work but you would have to try it to see. Otherwise mounted on-wall at 45deg elevation from MLP could also work but may be tooc lose to your ears. Otherwise just mounted as close to the top rear corners as possible or just do a x.x.2 setup.

Revel C763L = $825 34 degrees

JBL SCL-5 = $2,200
JBL SCL-8 = $1,100

The JBL SCL series speakers use compression drivers, dispersion patterns show below. Both models can be crossed over at 80Hz.
I did see those but at the start I was only going to do 45deg options until I saw there was a very limited number so I expanded down to 15deg and forgot about the JBLs.
Will add them to the list. But they are a strange beast with 15deg angled mids and 45deg angled tweeters and lookng at the drawing they may be designed to be listened to off-axis ? will investigate further.

Chane A4.5
15 degree baffle
At $299 a pair they are the middle priced option.
I miss read the title of this post. My recommendation was for an on wall/ceiling speaker.
Here's another suggestion that I was recently looking at and falls within the mid priced category for an in-ceiling angled speaker. Sorry about the mis-post earlier, hope this makes up for it.
Will add them to my on-ceiling section.

Updates probably won't be for a few weeks when I get time to sit down and update all my links and add all the new ones.
If you want to help you could repost all your new ones with the manufactuers link :)

Otherwise, this is a terrific list. I've bookmarked the post and will refer people to it going forward. Thanks for doing this!

Ideally you want all speakers in your home theatre setup aimed at the listeners. Which means 45deg angled baffle in-ceiling speakers for a x.x.2 and x.x.4 setup, 30deg for front and rear and 45deg for middles in a x.x.6 setup.

Many of us have couches quite close to the rear wall,

My ears are 2 feet in front of the back wall.

What would you suggest using for rears for that kind of "less than ideal" situation that can' t be changed for a 5.2.4?

Geoff, I use small bookshelf speakers on articulated mounts to point as closely to my ears as possible. My couch is unfortunately against the back wall.

This is a great idea for a thread I'm following and really looking forward to all the options getting put out here will definetly link this thread for people looking for good options for atmos in ceiling speakers

I'm not clear on what you mean.

"I did see those but at the start I was only going to do 45deg options until I saw there was a very limited number so I expanded down to 15deg and forgot about the JBLs. Will add them to the list. C763L, SCL-5 and SCL-8 are designed to be used as Atmos speakers, located off axis and aimed at the listening are to get on axis response. Re: the C763L, but the tweeter and midrange drivers are angled on one side and the woofer on the other side (I don't have the exact specs, but read somewhere it's 34 degrees). You aim the tweeter/midrange side at the listening area.

Here are the SCL specs:

High Frequency Coverage Angle (-6 dB)60-degree Vertical (Up 30-degree, Down 30-degree, from 45-degree Vertical Center line), 120-degree Horizontal, from 2k Hz to 10k Hz.

Like I said - the JBL are a strange beast :)
I wasn't quoting exactly from the specs but just pointing out they weren't true 45deg - I just saw they had different angles for different drivers and wasn't sure exactly how they worked.
But the specs are at -6db and only 2khz and up - to me that doesn't look as good as drivers pointing straight at you - but since this isn't supposed to be about how good, bad or indifferent speakers are I will certainly add them to the list.

So I currently have 2 micca 8” ceiling speakers for atmos. I am looking to move to a 4 speaker setup. Thinking about either the RSL c34e or the Klipsch CDT-5800-C II. Both are very similar in price. Any opinion on which would be better choice. I plan on powering them with a Emotiva basx a4. Thanks.

I have Silver Ticket 82AC angled ceiling speakers in my HT, another one to add to your list:

What about speakers with angle-able tweeters? Like my cheap monoprice calibers

The Paradigm you listed in the 1st post has some cousins. I have these installed:
which cost retail $500 from my dealer/installer. Sadly I paid exactly retail. But I know you can get them cheaper elsewhere.

You may as well point to the main selection page for Paradigm's in-ceiling speakers, as many of those are either angled or designed to be installed angled.

Definitive Technology is another option.

I have the RCS III as mains and RSS III as surrounds in a 7.2 non-atmos setup. Have an infinite baffle for subs (all speakers in ceiling, Ib subs replaced black PSA boxes as the large vents in my tray ceiling). Thinking I might try this setup in a 5.2.2 Atmos if I ever upgrade my receiver.

I can add a +1 to the need for angled speakers. I have an odd and many would consider terrible layout in my den for the TV and speakers, and my listening spot is about 36" off center. I've had 5.1 for years with high surrounds (10 ft ceilings) and decided to redo my setup for ATMOS with new low surrounds and for the new middles, I had to go with high ceiling mounts. I like Klipsch speakers and have a Klipsch center, so for the surrounds I bought Klipsch R5502-W II with a pivoting horn because my listening spot is about 5 feet forward of the speakers. I first bought Klipsch R-1800's for the middles which fire straight down. I thought this would be fine since they are even (front to back) with my chair. They sounded very good but I was not getting distinct separation width or height. After seeing other articles about about direction for the middle channels I replaced them with Klipsch CDT5800-C-II's with each one directed at my chair. The direction made a very noticeable difference over the straight down ceiling speakers. So to add tho the list, the directional Klipsch R5502-W II in wall surrounds with CDT-5800-C II's ceiling middles are a good choice.

Quick question about aiming the Atmos speakers towards the MLP. Majority is aimed towards the center since this is where the MLP is located. But what if the MLP is at the right seat in a 3 seater sofa? Do we then aim the speakers towards the right side?

#36 ·
I did aim them individually at my chair in the den. Very rarely is anyone else watching movies with me. Also my Marantz AVR stores two surround calibration "set points"... for lack of a better word. For one, I didn't move the mic from my chair, for the other I moved it around to the couches and chair where other folks are most likely to sit.

This thread is talking about angled speakers, right? ie. the entire speaker itself can be angled. Like many I also have a couch up against a back wall. I have 2 in-ceiling speakers directly above about 6" back from MLP. The tweeters can be angled up to 45deg, but only the tweeters. Does angling the tweeters help this situation and if so, angled back to bounce off top of rear wall? Angled forward towards where a Top Middle ceiling is supposed to be located? Angled so pointing at MLP?

Or since it's only the tweeters, no angling does much good at all?

#38 ·
You all almost had me with the RSL hype. Then I started searching and found this thread that confirmed that the Miccas are great full in-ceiling speakers that seem to have a descent dispersion pattern so I am going to keep my $600 for now.
